I was chatting with someone and he brought up the possiblity of someone hacking into my PDA. Is this possible? I mean, I guess it is for any computer system, but I just don't see it happeneing so much with PDAs.
And what about a virus? I'm sure someone could make one, but as long as the site you get software from is legit, there's not much to worry about, right?
Let's put it this way......you're PDA is 99.99999999999% more likely to get hacked by someone that is physically touching your PDA, than someone from the outside via a network. As for viruses, yes it is possible....no there are not any floating around as of yet.

Actually, there are a couple of viruses that carry themselves on PocketPCs but they wont do any harm on the device itself. Instead they try to infect all computers that you synch your device with.
The problem is not really hacking your PDA or adding a virus to it. The problem is getting sensitive information from your PDA via the IR port on the front without your knowledge.

I have a quick an easy security solution to that - duct tape.
or, if you prefer something that will match the colour of that part of the ax (more or less) - electical tape.

LOL....you mean my 99.99999999999% statistic isn't scientific enough for you? :D
Hehe.....should have just said "much more" :)

Actually, this really isn't a worry either. The nature of IrDA-SIR (used on PDAs) is a very short range of around 1-meter. So I'm sure you'd be able to notice that someone within 1m of you was aiming their PDA directly at your Axim. :)
This remains true even with units like the X3, which have Consumer-IR and IrDA-SIR. Even though it can reach 25+ feet for remote control of consumer electronics (uses Consumer-IR), the data transfer range (uses IrDA-SIR) is still only around 1m.

It's probably fair to say that if someone can get in range to try to grab your data via BT, Wifi or IrDA then they're close enough to grab the physical PDA and run too..
Much more risky IMHO is storing sensitive information on storage card or Built in Storage.
