My X5 has successfully beamed data to Palm handhelds, my Nokia 6200 cell phone, synched via IR with several IBM ThinkPad notebook PCs, and generally anything I tried. I don't try to use it as a universal remote, however. I have enough of those around as it is.

If you have the correct piece of software (and the correct codes for the appliances involved), it should work as a remote, but it seems a silly use for a PDA.

pdaWIN

Not silly, at all.

I have an X5 Advanced that I use for everything under the sun........I also have an X5 Basic that is nothing more than a Color Universal Remote........MUCH CHEAPER than a $500 Philips Pronto Pro Universal Remote, and will do everything a Pro will do PLUS MORE!

(I bought the Basic from a guy who had soaked it with coffee, thus saturating the Digitizer, for $40 "for parts". I then bought a new digitizer from www.gethitech.com for $50, an extra serial cradle+ac adapter on ebay for $25, pdaWIN software @ $15, CFIr Extender @ $35...and voilá......a $500 Universal Remote for WAY less than $200)!

I have tried and tried but I can't get that PDAwin software working. If I do a hard reset and only put it on, it works. If I put any other peice of software on the axim, PDAwin remote quits working. Veo pocket travler crashes it. Ewallet crashes it. Atomic pocket cannon crashes it?

Its great software and I know that other people can use it without problems. But why me? WHy wont it work for me?

Seems pdaWIN conflicts with several other apps, see This Thread.

If you've already purchased it, give tem a call or email, maybe they know some tweaks that will help.

Luckily, I don't have any of them, and my Remote works great. But, then-again, my pdaWIN is on an Axim dedicated as a Remote Control, with no other apps on it.

I have succesfully beamed numbers to and from various nokias, but have not been succesful with a Sharp GX-10i and a Samsung (dunno what one). The Ax detects them, but then fails to connect. I have no idea why.

I don't think your Ax is at fault, you might have a similar prob to me. Maybe the software on the SL55 is not capable of working with PPC, or some settings need changing. If you solve it, be sure to post the solution here so I can try it.

As for 'useful' things to do, you can use the IrDA connection to go online with the Ax, either GPRS or WAP (I've used WAP and it's great fun!). You can use it to update Avantgo pages and emails too.
