Really for Wardriving to work well, you will need a Wireless Laptop card with a plug in for an external antenna. My buddy and I do this sometimes for fun, and I use my laptop with an Orinoco Gold wireless card, and a magnetic mount 5dbi external antenna hooked to it. This is the best setup for wardriving.
He has an Ipaq 3835 with a PC card adapter sleeve that lets him use his laptop card with it. A compact flash wireless card really doesn't give you the signal strength you need for wardriving, but will work, just not nearly as well.
Anybody know of an Axim sleeve that will let you use a PC card like the Ipaq??? This would be the best setup and allow for great expandability.
oke i know how to wardrive with a laptop but with the dell how dous it work??
dousn't have a net use or anny other prog
i can't even acces my own network i need to load a ftp server prog to come on my own pc :S need some help here
i really wanna see how manny people have wifi :D:D
I'm going to check out my town sometime I think.. I have all the sniffers installed :)
I have a Linksys router/WAP at home on the 3rd floor with the antenna's in a 45 degree angle.. range is about 40 meters at most so I don;t think I will find a lot of WAP's around with my Pretec CF card
Commercial APs seem (in my experience anyhow) to be a little stronger than personal APs. My university's campus has several buildings with wireless APs (usually 4 per floor to assure full coverage). However, there is one library with just one AP per floor, and I was sitting in my car across the street and was able to get a weak 10-15% signal from it. This had to have been a good 250+ feet from the AP. I was using a DLink wireless CF card in my Axim, and was easily able to get good speeds on the net. So getting signals around your town might not be as hard after all. (unless you are mainly looking for residential APs).
Well I did not expect to find the amount of wireless activity in my neighborhood that I found last night.
I downloaded PocketWarrior and scanned my street. My street is only about 1000ft long. I found 9 wireless lans and 7 did not have WEP enabled. I tried to connect to one and was successfully able to connect standing next to my bedroom window (testing purposes only of course).
Needless to say I now have 128bit encryption turned on and I plan to change my passphrase often.
Does anyone know if SSID broadcast can be disabled on a Linksys AP?
yes u can i have a linksys ap and i can turn off the ssid broadcast go to your linksys webpage (ip) pass is standard admin :P then go to advanced (right yellow) then go to wireless and then well do i need to say more
I have a Dell Axim with the Dell branded TrueMobile 1180 wireless card.
Insert the card, click on the signal icon in the bottom right.
Choose Advanced + Site Monitor
You will now see the names of any and all wireless networks you walk or drive past that are within range - even just out of actual communications range.
Driving a round trip of 8 miles, while driving 45 miles per hour downtown, I picked up 11 wireless networks. All I did was lay the Axim on the dash of my car. 7 of those networks were labeled "Default" or "Linksys" and 4 of those were not encrypted when I took a second look later.
Once you identify where a network is, you must set up a profile for it before you can connect to it. As long as the wireless network name is the same and the network isn't encrypted you can use the same profile for several.
I have one wireless profile titled "Gamenet" that allows me to connect to my local CompUSA's Internet connection while sitting in their parking lot.
Downside of not using a laptop? Less range, and I can't immediately tell if a network is encrypted or not until I try to connect to it with a profile. This method of course will not bypass MAC address locking or encryption, but that's illegal anyway.
As far as legality goes. If I turn my AP off and set the defaults on my CF wireless card I will connect to my neighbors unit. I found this out by accident. I don't see how this can be illegal.
At first I thought I must have made a mistake and I was connected to my AP. I unpluged my AP to be sure and I was still able to pull up new web pages. If I hadn't checked I would probably still be using his connection and not know it.
I just ordered a new laptop from Dell last week, which will be here day after tomorrow. It comes with a wireless adapter, so I plan on trying some wardriving with it. I'll post here, what the results are. I also ordered a LinkSys AP for my home network, which will be here next week. I do plan to fully secure it, though.
I don't sharing a little bandwidth, but I do mind people getting into my server. I don't plan on using WEP, but I will be using MAC filtering, as well as SSID security. I'm considering a VPN, but I'm not sure yet.
It'll be interesting to see if my new laptop picks up any AP's just while sitting there in my apartment. :)
