Axim Seems Slow?
Have anyone noticed that their Axim seems slow? I've noticed that my Axim (400mhz) seems to be a bit slow, by slow, I mean "unresponsive". It would take a couple of milli-seconds before it registers a click, like when I click start -> program.
Another example would be accessing options in MSN messenger. I tested it on my Maestro (206mhz) and it seems to be a bit quicker.
Is this normal for the Axim to act this way, or am I just being over-paranoid?
P.S: I heard rumors from a Sales Rep that Dell ships so many Axims that it's possible that one or two (out of every thousand) may be "duds". Can anyone confirm this?
Thanks.

In everyday use an Axim should be no faster than older StrongARM Pocket PCs. The hardware and software is built to handle the faster processor that the Axim has.

I wasn't meant to compare it with the Strom ARM, just observing the general feel (responsitive) of the Axim.

I'm sure you can slow down an Axim by installing various software, especially shell modifiers.
I use Calendar Plus and Icbar, and BatteryPack, but it still seems pretty crisp.
Between tapping Start and seeing the menu open takes about 200 milliseconds. Opening an ebook with 3600 e-pages takes quite a while though.

I've noticed slow response time between tapping Start and seeing the menu open and I'm not even running any shell modifiers are any programs.
Is there a benchmark program that I can use?

This is strange but I've noticed that mine seems to have slowed down in the past couple of weeks. Problem is that I've loaded a few things so I'm not sure what is causing it. But WMP and Explorer seem to take much longer to load and play than they used to.
I've got my mp3's/wma's stored on a 1G MD. It's about half full. That could be causing it.

the Worthless Media Player scans every file in the system when it starts up.. so the time will be proportionate to the # of mp3's you have on your axim. I left a network drive mapped to my 20gigs of mp3s and basically killed the axim by accidentally running WMP. Its so hard to imagine that software engineers are writing such crap software these days, and probably being paid well for it. I guess thats what MS is all about still.

kidruiz has a point. Keep main memory free and the Ax will stay quicker.
Things that slow down PocketPC:
1. Lots of files on a SD or CF will slow down soft reset. It builds a complete directory on soft reset so more files = more time.
2. Lots of .lit files will slow down MSReader startup. Same problem, it looks for them ALL every time it starts.
3. Lots of .wma/.mp3, etc. slows down WMP. Same problem.
4. Lots of "resident" programs. (battery checkers, add-ins like dashboard/wisbar/icbar, etc., launcher programs, shutdown programs, etc.) Everything shares so the more to share the less everyone gets.
I use dashboard because I like it, so I am willing to pay the price. For books, I only carry the one I'm reading, plus one more as I get close to the end. I pull the CF card with music on it out unless I'm planning to listen to it. Finally, I install as much as I can to the SD card, to keep main memory free.

JakeRich, thanks for the info. You moderators don't get paid enough. I am off to modify some things on my Axim. BTW I never have noticed any real slowdowns yet but why wait?

*LOL* Yeah, gettin' paid $0 for all this valuable advice! Of course, advice is worth every penny you pay, so....buyer beware!
Thanks anyway, it's fun to help.
