FREE Hotspot located--now what?

I bought a symbol CF wifi card for my Axim 5 and I’ve been having so much fun with it. Now, I go to work today and find out that there is a coffee shop right across the street from my work that offers a FREE Access Point internet hotspot. They claim to have a 300 foot range. I don’t know yet if that is good.
Anyway, I wanted to tap into that while at the dentist which is right next door, but could not connect. Someone said I need an AP scanner on my Ax. I get that kind of, but maybe someone can tell me how to tap into known free hotspots like this coffee shop.

Most free places have an ssid setup. You could ask someone there what it is, or if they have a website check there. I know that the Panera bread company places around me have free wifi, their ssid is PANERA. If it is free, then they shouldn't have a problem giving you the info.
