When Will Ppc=desktop
WHEN DO YOU THINK A POCKET PC, SUCH AS THE DELL AXIM, WILL BE JUST LIKE A DESKTOP PC.
I AM WAITING FOR THE DAY WHEN I CAN US MY POCKET PC, JUST AS I WOULD A DESKTOP COMPUTER.
I WANT TO VISIT WEBSITES ON MY AXIM (ONE DAY) AND BEABLE TO VIEW PAGES, AND HEAR THEIR MUSIC IF THEY HAVE IT ON THEIR SITE. ALSO, I AM WAITING FOR THE PROCESSOR SPEED TO BE 2.4GHZ.
WHEN WILL THIS BE??????

PPCs will be equivalent to PCs when they can load the latest Microsoft Windows version. I.e. Windows XP.
Axims' memory capacity available for OS: 48MB or 64MB (WM2003 currently uses about 28MB)
Size of Windows XP: 700MB??? 1GB?
.......I'd say wait about 3 years.
As for PPC processor speed, first of all, I'm not sure that it's reasonable to compare a PXA-whatever at 400MHz to a Pentium or Celeron at 400MHz. Hell, you can't really even compare certain desktop CPUs/brands accurately that way.
However, ignoring the PXA vs. desktop CPU business, I reckon you'd be able to find a PXA at 2.4GHz in about 2-3 years as well, assuming the PXA line of processors will have any relevance that far into the technological future....
....I wouldn't hold my breath.

I think we've reached that point
Check this thing out.
It is a little pricy, but I got one, after saving up for a long time. It has Windows XP on it, and a Memory of 15 Gigs. It is really cool to be able to play games on here. It can run most off-the-shelf desktop software products. It is really cool. I got mine, and it was $1,500 with a rebate, but it is worth it, let me tell you. Here is the link
www.tiqit.com
The top navigation menus is where you will find the pics and specs and stuff, the main page is just like news and junk.

yeah, i saw that too, but....
i saw that too, but what i am talking about is actually using the pocket pc as a desktop/ppc/laptop/tablet/etc.
i want the technology to hurry up and bring us a damn pocket pc that can actually, and i mean actually as equivalent, equal, same as, etc. as a desktop computer.
imagine for a minute of using your pocket pc. your taking out your device, it is 2.4ghz, has 30gb of memory, has the full function of word, power point, windowsmedia, internet, etc. i mean, if this can happen, screw it, i will not buy a desktop computer.
when will this happen? the contributer said in a few years. how about tomorrow? no! man. they could put a robot in mars, and they cant do this. maybe i will enroll in MIT, or some other computer university and build my own pocket pc that can do all of the above. but that will take too long and too much effort. i will just wait then till it happens.
IMAGINE

BTW
you won't be able to get it personally for a while. My Dad's company got it when they came out in early January of this year for the employees. My Dad didn't want one, but I did, so they let me get it, that's how I got the rebate. For personal sales, it will prolly be a couple of months, but Companies can buy it now.

The Blue Dock is a nice gizmo to use to connect a monitor, mouse and keyboard to the PPC to use it like you would a laptop or desktop. However, you are still limited to the resources available on the PPC.
The PPC in general is meant to be a mobile device, not a complete replacement of a desktop or laptop. I could not even imagine a PPC running at 2GHz or higher; it is just unimaginable. How are you going to keep the CPU cool running at speeds that high without using an internal fan that adds bulk to the device and also makes it noisy?

The blue dock is pretty neat. I'd never get it, but I could see my grandparents with it.

i have to eat my words on some of what i said, but in terms of anything within average Joe's budget, I still think 3 years is how long you'll have to wait....
especially when you consider that the tigit weighs about three times as much as an X5. As for cooling a 2.4GHz CPU.....here's to hoping some newfangled mobile cooling tech comes out in the next year and is affordable by 2007.
I would definitely like to see a handheld with true PC functionality, though it would probably resemble a tiny tablet PC/laptop more than a PPC.
the keyboard in particular is an issue to me...I'd like to see a Dell-style folding keyboard that swivels and folds behind the handheld screen, kinda like those new Sonys. not too crazy about thumb keyboards.

Tiqit
The Tiqit Handheld I have, (THe link is above) is as close to a PC as you can get right now, The 4" screen is the res. of a laptop, and a 400 Mhz processor, I think, plus 15 Gigs of memory, and SD expansion, and everything else. It ha replaced my laptop completely. THe only complain I have is the small keyoard, but the microjoystick and mouse buttons are a nice touch.

If I were going to spend more than 300 or 500 dollars, I would rather get a laptop.

hey

i see that it is a crazy thought, but if read the posts, we are almost there. one may think a ppc is mobile, and should be limited to its standards. no way. i think we should one day (soon) carry pocket pc, like we were carrying a desktop pc, but without the desktop feeling.
as for technology, technology will always advance. tell a guy who lived in the 18th centure all the digital things we have now. no one would believe it.
ppc=desktop pc is what i am waiting for
