Has anyone ever had their Axim infected with a virus yet?

Not yet. (knock on wood) but I regularly run Airscanner antivirus scans on my Axim just in case. (I can't use the real time mode in Airscanner however as it is way too memory & CPU demanding)

as far as I have been able to determine, there are no PPC viruses yet.

true GUID, there are no known ppc viruses in existance yet....

that is why i would not waste my money on a virus program...

i have found a freeware one somewhere on freewareppc.com

awe would probobly find out about it here on aximsite before we got infected

That's what I thought.... So the scanners must be looking for any abnormal changes in system files????

thats what im guessing, either that or they are completely bogus programs designed to take advantage of the users ignorance....either way, no harm cause by just running a check every once and a while....

the scanners for PPC's are most likely scanning for exactly the same viruses they'd be scanning for on a normal PC. take any anti-virus vendor, look at their product for linux and you'll find the same thing - the definitions are mostly for windows viruses.

the idea is that the scanner just scans for all the viruses the company knows about for any platform. it makes a certain amount of sense too - if you're carrying files for a platform other than the one you're actually using. for example a linux mailserver or file server that has windows based clients. the most pertinent PPC example I can think of is if you were carrying PC files on your PPC to transfer between PCs (basically using your PPC as a removable storage device).

So you think the PPC Anti-Virus software is needed then? I guess if the software is scanning for known PC viruses. But if I know my PC is good to go because it is protected it should be okay unless I am downloading via wireless or being beamed files by other PPC users. I guess I can see the need....

it's not needed to protect your PPC at this time. as for protecting your PC I tend to think that a PC based anti-virus is a better use of resources than a PPC based one, and it will cover a broader range of infection vectors (i.e. email, web browsing, p2p, cd's, what-have-you on the PC) rather than just protecting you from files you might transfer to it from your PPC.
