Received New Axim 400- Not off to good start

Hmmmmm,

I just received my new Dell Axim 400 today and I immediately ran into a problem. When installing the coin sized back up battery, I noticed that the back up battery cover was kind of "sticking out". Upon closer inspection I noticed that one of the little hinges was fused downward, thereby not allowing the cover to firmly attach to the unit. This raised the cover a little, exposing the backup battery.

In Dell's defense I promptly called their support line and explained the situation to their support person. He said that a new one would be sent to me via overnight delivery to replace my defective one. If it wasn't sent out tonight, then definitely tommorrow, so he says. I will call back tommorrow to make sure the request is in the system. I was happy with Dell's support person.

Now on my first impressions of the Dell, it's a lot smaller than I thought it would be :) Based on some posts, I was expecting something bigger and bulkier. And I have to say, it's a really nice, slick design. It was love at first sight. Now I have to wait again for my replacement unit. They assure me that it will be a new unit and not a refurbished one, I sure hope that is true.

Ohhh well, I guess it'll all work out in the end since my WriteShields will not be arriving until Thursday and I wanted to slap those bad boys on immediately instead of having my axim's screen exposed for the next couple of days.

In any case, since i'm a brand new axim owner.......well partial, not until i get my replacement, can anyone tell me what I should do first when i receive it? Any pitfalls? I understand that you have to install activesync on the desktop computer first before connecting the cradle to your computer? Then charge battery in the cradle? I remember a post somewhere around here that had some information about that.............Any advice would be appreciated, so that I don't make any newbie mistakes. Thanks

First thing you should do is charge it for a minimum of 4 hours. After that you can start playing around with it, install ActiveSync, etc. :)

You're correct about the sequence; install Active Sync first before you connect the Axim to the PC. Make sure you assign Admin privleges for your user before doing this so that everything goes properly the first time. As I recall, you must install AS logged on as the user.

You can start charging the battery in the cradle before conecting to the PC, or even just plug the charger cable directly into the Axim.

If you are not already using Outlook, set it up as your default email handler ahead of connecting the unit. I was using Outlook Express for years, but the changeover is pretty painless.
The biggest difference for me is that it's more difficult adding items to the Blocked Senders list.
Outlook comes on the Dell CD if you don't already have it.

Read the manual.

Save yourself the 4 hours and charge the battery you have in the cradle. That way when the new one arrives, you plop in the already charged battery and no waiting! Instant Axim.
