How large is your "Windows" folder and what to get rid of?
My "Windows" folder (PPC 2002) is currently 29,4 MB large. I found some files i suppose may be deleted
- in the "AppMgr" folder there are .DAT and .DLL files of applications ive already deinstalled and no longer have on my pda - i suppose nothing'll (except of some reduction of the mess in the windows folder) happen if i delete them...am i right?
- and then - if there are some analogical files in the windows folder, please tell me
- plus one rather off topic question - how should i change the icon of .txt files, which has been that of an "unknown" file since i deinstalled pocket notepad - should i use some registry editor and if so - which is the best one (once i tried to install the PHM registry editor but the installation on my pc failed for some reason)
- then i have some other bugs which i unfortunately suppose not to be solved here - like the calendar reminders not working and the total unability to synchronize with pc (can be connected only as a guest and each time i connect activesync asks me if i want to create a partnership - i have to refuse and stay as a guest - its pretty annoying..so if anyone can write a few words about it, i won't be angry :)
thanx in advance for any suggestion & have a nice day!
It sounds like you are working your way to a hard reset!
I had similar problems with pocketnotepad and activesync.. my eventual solution was a hard reset.
I dont know if the download section has it but get remover for the ppc.. it helps clear out the extra files that werent uninstalled. aND the temp files.
I can't really help you with all the problems, but as to deletable Windows files, might I suggest that instead of deleting them you move them to a CF or SD card (mot permanantly), test resetting the Axim with the files missing and move them back if it gives your grief. Also you may want to clear the cache in PIE, but I doubt that will help too much.
As to restoring the icon for txt files, a free program called Pocket Tweak can do that for you. Otherwise, you can use Resco File Explorer to do that as well.
NICK > thanx - but could you please write the way to fix that icon problem with resco file explorer? i tried to do it via Files --> Tools --> Associate with (pocket word), but the icon stays the same (even after soft reset)
AWDARK > thanx - the hard reset is something i wouldnt like to do, of course...but if nothing else helps, then i'll do it - but then i would like to have the confidence that it solves the problems (reminders, syncing) once for all and not that after some time without apparent reason the bugs will creep again...

Just get a nice sized SD Card and a Registry Cleaner and leave well-enough-alone!!!
I can NOT comprehend why people think saving 72K here and .385M there, by mucking about in the Windows Folder is ever going to end up with a happy ending!!??!!
There are such things as Shared Files, and just because it "looks" like it was associated with an app you just removed (at least I hope it was Removed, as opposed to Deleting it outright), doesn't mean it's still not used by some other app and was just renamed a bit when you installed the app you just deleted)!
Install as much as is possible to a Card, and just leave the Windows Folder ALONE!!!.......I'd be willing to bet that you'll be a much happier camper!
(Jess be sure to run that Registry Cleaner ever once't inna while)!
"High" time me and my buddy Ron Rico played a serious game of Quarters!!! :hide:

I too had too many crap in my Windows and Program files Folders
So what I did was a hard reset. After a hard reset the system is restored to the day you got it new out of the box.
Then before I install any software(Except Resco Screen Capture) I go through the Windows and Progam Files Folders and use the Rescoe Screen Capture (it comes on the Dell Companion CD) to save images of these folders. The captured images are then saved on a CF or SD card or even the Desktop computer.
Hence, if I see too many "bug' files in any of these folders I can look back at the captured images and know what not to delete.
The following pic is one of the captured images of the windows folder - fresh from the factory. So I know that these files must Not be deleted.
Well there will always be bug files - the more application you install the more you'll have. However, some of those bugs don't go away after you delete "its" application.
Hence, my clean up method becomes handy.
actually i find myself having to clean out stuff in the winddows folder quite often.
the difference is that what I'm cleaning out are not program files or anything. it turns out the temporary internet files in my "profiles" folder build up rather quickly and every now and then it's prudent to go in their and delete stuff manually (PIE doesn't get rid of these for some reason). frees up 5 megabytes, easily, if you've never cleaned it out before.
(only know to look there because7 of WIMR...)

theres a .dat file in this directory on my axim and its like 2mb. /windows/profile/guest/temp internet files/index.dat. It wont let me overwrite or erase it. The more i surf the net with axim, the larger this dum file gets until i hard reset the system. This file stays there even after some sort of clean up software erases all temp files.
also is it possible to put the macromedia program on a storage card to run off? because thats also neraly 1mb
