can you really tell the difference between 128kbps MP3s (1 minute per megabyte) and 64kbps wmas (two minutes per megabyte)? I've only ever noticed it in one of my music files.
I honestly think most of the difference between the various bitrates is psychological.
...and I don't use crappy headphones. in fact, it was only on my headphones that I was able to notice the defect in that one wma file (which may simply need to be re-converted). can't tell over my speakers.
i'm sure there's a difference between 64kbps wmas and 192kbps MP3s on a great sound system, but IMO the only major issue is compatibility with winamp, etc. I reckon I'll make good use of that converter, though the resulting OGG files better be real close to the 2min/MB compression I get with wma. once you get used to all that extra memory, it's hard to go back.
and while we're on the subject of music format quality, I recall a post I saw some time ago that was very detailed and informative... it's only tangentially related to this thread, but I think it deserves some more exposure. Check out Mike Walker's post on
this page.
