Palm to PPC
I have been a Palm user until now, my Ax is supposed to arrive tommorow (joy). How is it adjusting from Palm to PPC, and is the letter reconizer in PPC better or should I stick to Graffti which I know well?

Well I'm a Palm convert as well. The adjustment has been easier than I thought. I was tentative for a couple of days but that seems to have passed. I've been enjoying the Ax :)
As for input, I use Block Recognizer, as they call it on the Axim, most of the time and that is the same as Palm's graffti. I did not even try the other modes of input since this works real well for me. I'd suggest you play around with all modes of input and stick to the one you like the most.

I am a Palm convert also. The input is something I will have to get used to. As hkoyuncu mentioned, the PPC does have "block recognizer" which appears to be identical to graffiti. I would like to use one of the other options and cut all my ties with the palm based system, so it is taking me some time to learn the "new" way of writing. Other than that, there are pretty much the same.

Another Palm convert here....
I used to love grafitti but I never use it on the Axim. Transcriber is very good if you take the time to train it to your writing style (my hand writing is terrible). I find it is more accurate for me then grafitti was. Having said that, I often use the point and click keyboard for entering data into forms (just seems faster).
No flames here but Even palm has now dropped grafitti in favour of Jot.
I can still impress friends who haven't used a PDA with transcriber by writing a sentence on the screen and then watching it magically change to perfect text

IIRC, Palm was sued by someone (I want to say Xerox) in a patent infringement case. I think this is why graffiti got dropped for Jot....

Raynman,
If you really want to impress your friends, try this one on them:
using transcriber write down:
2 + 2 =
you will be pleasantly suprised with the result transcriber comes up with.

I was also a Palm user, and my Axim is coming soon.
How can you copy your data from the Palm to the Axim (contacts, appointments, ...) ? Is it possible without buying a special software ?

Transfer Palm Address Book to Axim?
I also just got my Axim last night and would like to transfer all my addresses, memos, and ToDo lists from my Palm to the Axim. The problem I'm running into is when I go to beam my whole address book there is a lock icon and I get a message that says, "Cannot Beam - Copy-protected apps and databases cannot be beamed. These are listed with a lock icon next to them." Any help how I can transfer my whole Address Book without doing it one-by-one would greatly be appreciated. Thanks

For JCC:
Getting your contacts into your Axim is easy (I didn't worry too much about appointments and did them manually but I had 1000+ contacts in my Palm). I used the instructions originally posted by Raynman in January:

I went through this nonsense as well. The best solution (for me) was not that easy but it was clean.
1) export from Palm sync to a *.csv file on your PC.
2) open *.csv with Excel or other spreadsheet
3) Reorganize the columns so that all the info is in the proper columns (it won't be) and take this oppotunity to clean up info. It helps to use Outlook contacts to get a feel for the field names that Outlook expects since they are differnent then Palm's
4) Save the file again as *.csv format
5) Import into Outlook and use the wizard to drag the columns into the proper fields
6) sync your Ax!
I know there are other methods but this allowed me to control the entire process (since I cluld see all the contact info in the spreadsheet) and I was sure the info was clean in the end.
Good luck! [/QUOTE]

I converted from a Palm IIIC. I like the block recognizer which is simmilar to grafitti, but I also think the transcriber is really cool.
Converting my data from the palm was simple. I was using outlook for my desktop PIM instead of the palm desktop, so all I had to do was sync my axim and I was done! If you are using the palm desktop just sync your palm, and then reinstall hotsync. When it asks which PIM you want to use select outlook (if you don't already have a copy, one is included on the dell disk). Then sync your palm with outlook. All your info should now be in outlook. uninstall hotsync and install the activesync. Sync your axim and you are done.

It is easier but here's the reason I went with the longer solution.
I wasn't using Outlook with my Palm for contacts, appointments, etc. I was using the Palm Desktop software. When moving to Outlook, there are a lot more options for the contacts data (more phone number slots, etc). I wanted control to make sure the data went in the "right" spots. It took longer but I was able to be sure that the finished data was accurate and useful.
Something to think about

I wasn't using Outlook with my Palm for contacts, appointments, etc. I was using the
I tried the .csv route and all goes well until I try dragging the entries from window left to window right when importing the csv file into outlook.
It doesn't matter how many times I try it or which contact I advance to before matching up the categories there are still dozens of contacts that are missing the details.
One other thing....they all have (1) next to the list....can anybody expain this please?

I think Caligrapher is supposed to be the best, I know ppl that swear by it, but I dont personally like it. I just use letter recognizer heh.
