Many people have done it without any problems. The main 'issues' you may run into are some programs and device drivers for PPC02 do not run properly on WM03. In some cases it's as simple as downloading a new version but some of these have never been upgraded and others charge you for the new version. There are several threads in the Microsoft Mobile 2003 forum that discusses the software issues but make sure you look at the dates of the posts since they go back to the first release of WM03. Some software suggested to not be compatable may have been upgraded since the post was made.

Some of us haven't bothered to spend the $30 to upgrade our X5s. If you are still undecided and you have the X5 advanced, you might considered applying the free ROM upgrade for PPC02 to A04 if you haven't already. It makes some improvements to the earlier ROMs of PPC02.

i upgraded to wm2003 and i have an X5 basic. no real issues other than the ones ike mentioned. the only complaint i would have is that the ax now disconnects for no apparent reason when sitting in the cradle and synced to my computer.

i have noticed, like others have, that there is no initial sync sound - not a big deal to me.

just my 2 cents.

ppc2003 and vpn over bluetooth

If you are planning to use your X5 with bluethooth, Gprs and vpn, there is a problem. On ppc2002 the os handles it OK but there seems to be problems with ppc2003. Ppc2003 can not handle bluethooth very well, and that gives you a profile, something like (226C56-CDF435-......). The profile handling on ppc2003 is more complex than ppc2002 and the vpntunnel will not function beacuse it is located in another profile e.g My Network...

There is also a problem with NAT. If you for instance have an ISP that give you "black" adresses and you want to connect to your network that also have "black" adresses, you will have problems.
PPC2003 knows how to handle black adressing to public, but not back again.

To my knowledge there is no permanent solution to this. The only thing that exits is a client from Certicom (Movian VPN Client), but that software is still in it´s BETA stage, probobly released beginning, mid april.

I upgraded smoothly and like it very much. I have had no problems with it's features and can get online easily as well. Only you can know if it is worth the price. Make your decision soon because I understand Dell will discontinue selling it soon. Good luck.
