X5 Re-released

Maybe everyone already knows this, but I talked to a tech support guy at Dell this evening about an X5 display problem and he said that they don't make the X5 any more, (only the X3) but the demand is such that Dell is going to reissue the X5 soon...

I wonder what the price will be compared to the X3?

No - I was rather disappointed that he could not solve my problem and I did not ask... (My screen died and it appears to be permanent.)

Hmm, I'm definitely curious too. As far as I heard, the X5 was discontinued. :-/

What I have heard is that the demand was so great there was a huge backlog of orders so they pulled the X5 "off the shelves" so to speak. The plan was to start selling again once the backorders were filled.

lets see....

I think it would make sense for dell to put the X5 back on the market. I have lots of people asking me if they can get an X5 rather than the X3. The price would be about $100 less than it was originaly. New Features? Nah, dell might bundle some free software, but really new features, nah. (Though i think they will do a small hardware upgrade to the faulty parts). I can ask my contact in sales at Dell and see if he knows anything. But anyway, I think having 5 axim choices is a good idea.

It's scary to imagine that Dell could make a marketing mistake like that. They take a very popular product and discontinue if for 6 months? Sounds like somebody should get fired!

It was all a big ploy.....

Maybe it was a marketing ploy.....take it off the market, get everyone screaming and then bring it back, makes you sound like a humanitarian or something

this is the best answer to the question of what happened to the X5.

for my take on this, see my posts in this thread.

I may be the one who started that rumor (or at least contributed to it). I stand by my predictions, but please be careful and remember that it is only an educated guess.

there is no way dell could be dumb enough to drop the X5 on a whim, "suddenly" discover all this new, hidden demand, and then decide to re-release the device. dell could not have become the #1 PC maker in the world (or just US?) by making moronic marketing decisions like that.

alternately, it does NOT take 3 whole months to catch up with back orders for a PPC that only ("only") has 5-6% of the PDA market share. A reasonable, though I think unlikely, possibility is that there is an Axim supply crisis and orders had to be halted for 3 months in order to restore the product.

and if it really takes 3 whole months to re-introduce the X5 exactly as it was before, with no new features, just to meet "better than expected" sales, either sales went up 1000% or dell's supply system really blows...

My theory is that when the x5 comes back, it will have bluetooth support. Think of how you would feel if you ordered an x5 online one day, and they started selling the bluetooth model for the same price the next day. I think they took it offline so the orders would dwindle down, then they could release the bluetooth model.

Of course, it may just be a Coke Classic/New Coke scheme. :P

aardWolf, your theory is the most plausable imho...except for the bluetooth part...I don't think they'd pull it because of that...besides, the bluetooth would cost more so i would be like and Axim X5i or something. It's more likely they want the orders to dwindle because they are doing like EEG said and upgrading the entire inner workings of the unit.
