Worried Newbie Question: CF card or SD card?

Where do YOU install your software? To the primary
memeory or to a CF card or Sandisk? Also, what is the difference between a Sandisk and a CF card? What is the best value for more memory, meaning, how much should it cost,
and should I get a SD card or a CF card? I already have a 128 CF card. Where can I get the best buy for the value? Thanks!

I like SD for memory and CF for my WiFi card. This FAQ can explain the differences... ;)

Buy as large a Secure Digital card as you can afford and install your programs there. Leave the Compact Flash slot open for peripherals. SanDisk is a company that makes cards. I have a 256MB SD card that never gets ejected, a CF Wi-Fi card, a CF Bluetooth card (en route), and a 256MB CF card full of MP3s.

CF cards are definatly cheaper for larger capacity. You can go to dell.com and buy sandisk 1gig cf card for $233.90 which = about 24 cents a meg. Buy.com has a 256 sd card for 69.99 which equals 27 cents per meg but that gets a lot higher for a 512 sd. I would buy the 256sd to have always installed and then use the cf for wireless or other i/o devices. The sd memory also uses less power so it is a good solution.

As far as installing programs to ram or external, It depends on whether you have the 64mb ram or 32. If the 32, I would install large applications like lextionary or other such programs with files that are a couple megs. Small programs like wisbar or hearts I would just go ahead and put on the machine itself. Things run a little faster on the ram.

Wi-Fi (short for "wireless fidelity")
It is just the name for wireless networks using the 2.4ghz freq.
Yes you can connect to it with your dell. You will need a 802.11b cf card for it.

Linksys card for $47 after rebate.

Not really since I have yet to see a card with 802.11a in cf format. In pcmcia though it is for the wireless networks that run on 5ghz range(making them faster). Below is a paste of some info about them all. I would feel pretty certain that she is running "b" (because "a" is more expensive and pretty much just came out) but I would ask her to be on the safe side. If she is running "a" then you'll probably just have to wait until cf cards come out supporting it. Hope this answers your question.

802.11 refers to a family of specifications developed by the IEEE for wireless LAN technology. 802.11 specifies an over-the-air interface between a wireless client and a base station or between two wireless clients. The IEEE accepted the specification in 1997.
There are several specifications in the 802.11 family:

802.11 -- applies to wireless LANs and provides 1 or 2 Mbps transmission in the 2.4 GHz band using either frequency hopping spread spectrum (FHSS) or direct sequence spread spectrum (DSSS).
802.11a -- an extension to 802.11 that applies to wireless LANs and provides up to 54 Mbps in the 5GHz band. 802.11a uses an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing encoding scheme rather than FHSS or DSSS.
802.11b (also referred to as 802.11 High Rate or Wi-Fi) -- an extension to 802.11 that applies to wireless LANS and provides 11 Mbps transmission (with a fallback to 5.5, 2 and 1 Mbps) in the 2.4 GHz band. 802.11b uses only DSSS. 802.11b was a 1999 ratification to the original 802.11 standard, allowing wireless functionality comparable to Ethernet.
802.11g -- applies to wireless LANs and provides 20+ Mbps in the 2.4 GHz band.
