Connect to PC without Asynch

Is it possible to connect to a PC (ie transfer files) without installing active synch?

Just like I can connect my Sony cam (USB with USB mass storage driver), a extra driveletter pops-up and I can transfer files back and forth.

That would be handy, especially to use the Ax to simply transfer files to and from any comp. with a USB port. Anyone know the long and short answer?

You don't need AS. Once connected, just browse to the AXIM via your file explorer and copy..works both in directions. This can also can be easily done via a laptop an IR port.....only drawback is speed.

I just tried to hook it up on a PC without active synch but I can't see a "mobile device" in my explorer and windows complains about an USB device with no drivers.

I tried the driver in microsoft asynch\drivers but those won't work the way I want it to.

Does anyone have a clue which driver must be installed to see the axim as a mobile device without all the asynch garbage.

Those are the same as in the microsoft asynch\drivers directory... those install a Dell Axim USB device but it won''t show up in the explorer.. that's another challenge :)

lindsj,

this driver works great on 2 windows 2000 machines that I have. It should work on 98 as well.

there is a critical kernal difference between Windoes 9x/ME the NT series (which includes Windows 2000 [the best windows build]) and XP, which is based off of unix. So while programs usualy work no matter which system you have, drivers usually have different versions for 9X and 2000/XP.

Tat being said I wish that the axim would work entirely without drivers in all operating systems that support removable HD's (namely XP/2000 and maybe ME, but who in their right mind uses ME)
