Question Questions for X5 basic users.

I own an X5 basic running WM2003 on a PXA255. I wonder if I am maximizing the performance of this device.

The programs I have loaded on the device are:

Wisbar Advanced
PocketMVP
Pocketnester
Bible Reader(olivetree.com)

My memory shows:
Storage Memory - 2.66mb (in use)
Program Memory - 5.75mb (in use)

What is a good amount of memory to have available to run programs?

All of my bibles, games, pictures, videos, and files are on a 64mb Lexar SD card.

Videos seem to run at full speed without skipping. I get 30 fps on pocketnester (if that is what the little number is on the bottom left corner). I tried pocketsnes (bleedingedge) but it was too slow. I even tried speedstepper (398mhz) and regking to increase the glyph cache. The games ran alittle faster, but they were too slow for me to enjoy. (test game was Madden NFL 93)

Is there anything else I can do to maximize the performance of my axim basic? I am not sure if the bus speed has increased since I upgraded to WM2003.

Maybe install some programs to your memory card, that will free up a lot of program/storage memory! If you need to know how to install a program to a memory card, just ask. And you can also do soft-resets through out the day, because that also frees up memory.

There's not really anything you can do on your Axim Basic to maximize the performance except maybe overclock it.

That's not a very popular option at this point of PPC users.

Your RAM seems to be more than enough to run anything out right now.

Pocket nester runs good, maybe loading your game in PPC main memory will help a little with performance. The RAM on the unit reads faster than the SD cards. But I would only recommend maybe 1 or 2 of your most favorite games and that's it.

Hi I have a basic pxa255 running 2002. I also used SpeedSteeper to overclock to 398 to play pocketSnes games, however I now use XCPUscalar "which costs a little money" and I now overclock to 472 with no problems and the difference is noticeable. one suggestion Madden 93 is a bad choice for an pocketSnes test I think it will always run slow. Try a game like Zelda 3 or final fantasy or something similar. Download a trail version of XCPUscalar from imersionsoft.com "not sure about spelling" and try to run some pocketsnes games you should notice improvement. I also think XCPUscalar will increase you bus speed.

Question Bus speed question

Do I need XCPUscalar to increase the bus speed, or did the upgrade to WM2003 do that already?

I notice others talking about frames per second alot. How many fps should I expect out of the basic for games and movies?

Basically, I am trying to decide if I want to stick with my X5 basic and wait for the next line of ppc's, or jump to a faster device like the X3 or hp 41xx/22xx/19xx.

Thanks for the help.

Once again I am not sure about this as I run wm 2002 but I believe XCPUscalar will increase bus speed even more. As for frames per second with Pocketnester and the sound on I get about 50 fps, with pocketSnes I generally get somewhere between 15 to 30 fps with no sound (this is when overclocking to 472 with XCPUscalar. My advice stick with the basic for now espically since you have one with a pxa255 "just my advice"
