Cancel order and reorder to speed up process?

I am contemplating doing the following in order to get my Axim quicker:

First of all, I ordered my Axim (400, with 256MB SD card) on 2/6 and was given a ship date of 2/26. My order status is still "InProduction".

I have called Dell a few times and nobody knows why there are many people on this board that have ordered their Axim after me and received it before me. Heck, I just read somebody's post that they ordered it on Sunday and it's in their hands right now.

Anyway, according to Dell's website, the current estimated ship date for the 400 is 2/28 (only 1 day later than my current date). I'm considering taking a chance by cancelling my current order, and then reordering it. Maybe I'll be one of these lucky people who will receive it early. Even if it doesn't work, the estimated ship date is still only 1 day later (2/28 vs. 2/27) so I wouldn't really lose anything.

Has anyone done anything like this? I know that it's definitely not a first-order first-serve situation.
Thanks.

IMHO don't cancel. Dell's "build status" is not that accurate, especially with the Axims. I ordered mine on 2/3 and received it on 2/17. Yours should be coming soon. I don't know why someone people are getting theirs in three days. Maybe if you complain enough, or to the right person, you could get a free cradle or something to make it a little easier. I know it stinks waiting, but try and be patient, it will come and you will enjoy it.

I did.

Actually, I didn't cancel my first order, but I did order a second. Here's the story:

My order was placed on January 17th. I haven't heard of anyone else who has been waiting since then. In fact, two different Dell reps have said that they haven't heard of a wait that long, and one was convinced that there must be some error somewhere. True, I ordered the folding keyboard, but that's only supposed to cause a four day delay. My shipping date has been bumped six times!

So I placed a second order today, without the keyboard. When one Axim ships, I'll cancel the other. I have no doubt, though, that the new order will be the one to arrive first. (My original order's date was bumped again today!)

The worst thing that can happen is that they will both ship at once and I'll have two Axims. But there's always eBay--or somebody in the forum might want it. Warranties transfer.

I wouldn't recommend doing this unless, as in my case, you think there may be something truly wrong. It's pretty desparate, but I sold my iPAQ in January to make all this possible, and I can't go "brainless" much longer. (Yes, paper and pen work well, but it's just not the same for what I do.)

Cool Sorry .. but I ordered mine on 2/14 and...

... I just got it today... despite the ice-storm on the East Coast (I'm in RTP , NC) ... I'm also a bit ansi about ordering things .. and would be on their hair trying to find out why you haven't got it yet ... that's just me.

6 months from now, these PDA's will be in plastic containers hanging on the shelves at Fry's BB & CC. Don't trip over yourself to buy one.

Dell's order system is really whacked out. I ordered a 400mhz axim on 2/16 and it came today, 2/19, meaning it was in production only from 2/16 to 2/18 and shipped at 2pm on 2/18. I must be one of the lucky ones....:D

PDA came quick

That sucks that your order is so delayed. Last Thursday on the 14th I just decided to order an Axim 400MHz+TrueMobile wireless card+Leather carrying case, and it all arrived today on the 19th. I hear so many stories about such long waiting times. I guess I got lucky.
I'm actually typimg this out right now on my new PDA :) I installed a landscape program and have been surfing the net for hours now. Man this is one of the sweetest things I've ever bought for myself. I thought it was going to feel bulky or cheap, but it's not, it's just amazing. Wow, I am in awe. I love this PDA.

Here's hoping you get your PDA soon!

I'm pretty sure you are one of the guys that called me. I'm sorry I wasn't much help. I ran to 2 differnt managers and they both told me to get you over to CS. Didn't mean to give you the runaround....

You're right--that was me. Never did get through to CS after three different attempts that afternoon/evening.

I've talked to 10-12 different people at Dell over the phone since mid January (when this began), you were by far the most helpful. (I'd recommend that anybody wanting to buy call Rad-Man.) Thanks for the time and effort--

Ok, after all of my whining, and after 4 or 5 calls to Dell, my Axim is "In Transit".

C'mon, though...you have to understand why I was so upset. I can't stand the wait - especially when tons of Aximsite users were bragging about receiving their Axims 3 days after they ordered.

Anyway, I'll be checking UPS tracking every 10 minutes now for some reason. That's just the way I am.

IT WORKED!

Amazing.

Read my above post if you don't know the background on this--it's worth a few extra seconds.

Less than 24 hours after placing the order for Axim #2, it is already showing up as "In Transit".

Also today, I received an automated phone call saying that my Axim #1 order has been bumped again to March 3rd!

BTW, I ordered #2 over the web site, so as far as I know, there was nobody who knew about the Jan. 17th order that may have helped things out.

Don't know what to make of it all. Really don't care. Since I got FedEx overnight, I've already started watching for the truck.

this just depresses me even more at this point. Ordered mine over three weeks ago and haven't seen any motion toward it actually getting shipped my way. The only thing dell will tell me is that "the keyboard is delaying your order" but everyone around me is getting theirs with keyboards in in half the time I've been waiting. Guess I'll just have to call and yell at them some more....

Go for it.

And in the meantime, check out the PockeTop/Micro Innovations folding keyboard. It's on sale this week at CompUSA for $30 after rebates.

My Jan. 17th order also contained the folding keyboard, but I waited well beyond the four day delay that Dell quotes for this accessory.

Consider the PockeTop even more . . .

I just cancelled that original order, and the rep on the phone said that the new delayed date--because of the Dell folding keyboard--is on or before March 20.

This might not be right. It wouldn't be the first time that a rep was given wrong information from above. But it's something to think about.
