on the net - simple solution
I just have to pass on my delight with the phone to Axim cable/modem cable I just got. http://store.yahoo.com/gomadic-new/delaxx5adtom.html This things works great using my cheapie Kyocera 2035 phone (Alltel phone network). I am able to surf the net, and send/receive e-mail easily. No WiFi, Bluetooth, or extra bulky cards to buy. The on-line detailed installation instructions http://store.yahoo.com/gomadic-new/support.html worked perfectly the first time. What fun!

Oh MAN! I Wish I would have known this couple weeks ago!
So far, I've purshased a serial cable from Dell, and another serial cable for my AudioVox 9155 phone, a null modem adapter,
and 2 genger changers. Over $80, 6ft of cables and 5 connectors and MY AXIM still can't see the phone as a modem.
I went ahead and put my order in...will try to post my success (or not).
Thanks!
D.

Sounds great.
Have to admit I don't know a lot about using a cell phone as a modem. Can you tell me what type of performance you get?
Am I correct to assume that it is slower than with a normal dial-up connection?

I'm sure you pay Alltel for minutes used, but do you have to pay extra since you're on the internet? Who is the provider, and what do you pay for access?
I'm planning on getting this product, but those are my main questions--

pmoto, It is not fast - 14.4bps, but it's great for getting your e-mail and doing a little surfing.
SoAlive, Yes you do have to pay Alltel for the minutes, but at night and on weekends Alltel is essentially free. My ISP is a little local outfit (Charlottesville, VA) that costs me $9.95/month.

My Nokia won't do the trick so i have to upgrade my phone. AND, it appears that Cingular adds a fee for internet use (although how could they know? its just another call)...

KKrew, Although my cell phone folks (Alltel) do not seem to charge extra for an internet connection (I guess I really won't know until the next bill comes in) I do believe they can automatically tell what you are doing because it is a data transmission. As soon as the handshaking computer tone is generated at the ISP, the phone displays the speed (14.4 bps) and the fact that it is a data transmission. Big Brother knows, and will charge you accordingly.
This is my first weekend with the Gomadic unit, and I hope to try some surfing to see just how well it works (free minutes on the weekend). The e-mail send and receive works plenty well enough to justify the cost, and the fun I am having is priceless.
I got the standard Gomadic cable, which is about 12 inches long, and I hold the phone back to back with the Ax. It is almost like having a smart phone. I use the program Battery Pack, and have put an icon for "inbox" in the program bar. All I have to do is tap the inbox icon, and tap the connection tab. It dials the phone, connects, and downloads my email. I still can't believe it works so well, and am waiting for the other shoe to fall. Alltel will probably charge me $100 a minute.

WOW AGAIN!
I ordered my Gomadic cable late afternoon on the 20th, and was surprized, I had my Axim surfing the net by 12:00 on the 22nd connected to my Audiovox 9155 cell phone. I was thinking I was going to have to wait till mid March for supplynet, but Gomadic Corp beat them to the market, as well as in price. way to go!
I set up the connection for verizon, #777, login: qnc, password: qnc. It dialed and connected first time, but internet explorer kept saying the page was not found. I had to do some research and found a modem init string that my phone must need to get ie to work on the verizon net. After I put that string in, I was able to go to web sites. Now I need to find out what my data limit is for verizon. Have to learn to be patient at 14.4 baud.
now anyone have any suggestions what I can do with 2 serial cables, 2 genger changers and null modem adaptor?
Thanks again!
D.

yeah, i got online with my samsung s105 through the irda. I liked that fact that I didnt have to purchase any additional cables and the configuration was a snap. What I didnt like was that the phone and axim had to be in direct sight of each other. not so bad when in the home/office and you have a desk, but out in the field or in the car, it gets difficult.
just picked up a moto v70 and am waiting to pick up a data cable. i like the fact that with the cable, the phone can be in your pocket, a backpack, or even on your belt clip. Also, the irda due to the limitation of irda transfer is slower than cable. I think irda is limited to 9600bps.
either way, wireless internet is awesome!
