CompactFlash Gap in Axim and first thoughts
Hello All, I was examining my newly aquired Axim, and I noticed taht since I used a type 1 CF card there is a pretty big exposed gap to the innards of the axim to allow dust and such in...

Is there any safe way to plug this gap? I wish someone would make a cover for it shaped like the plug that came in the slot. Except have this plug fit over a type I CF memory card so we could keep dust out and keep the original sleek axim look.

Also this being my first pocket pc (I'm also a sony clie user) I don't know as much about them as I would like. I was wondering if there was any way to delete stuff from the rom. I have an app on the clie that allows me to remove stuff from ROM I don't need. And I really don't need instant messanger and the dell theme (etc etc) I know it's not much stuff to remove, but My palm habits make me want to get rid of all extraneous stuff, even if it's small... (and as a personal thing I hate having messenger on any of my systems)

Otherwise I'm pleasantly surprised by the axim. The price was good. (249$ for the 300mhz version) The size is tolerable.

I do have to mention that I find my sony's screen to be superior to all the pocketpcs I have seen (I know people argue about how the ipaq's screen is so much better etc etc) But the dell screen is decently clear, even for having low res. The Center button bothers me though... They ought to just get some people (like those that design buttons for the gameboy advance) and have them build a real directional pad.

And surprisingly for 400mhz (I've overclocked mine) it's surprisingly slow... I can't say it's much faster than my Clie which runs at a measly 66mhz... though I attribute this to the windows doing something bizzare whenever it feels like it, cause I have been monitoring the cpu usage and it randomly spikes and stays high, even when it's idle... On the plus side, My reencoded divx plays nice... and it's more effiecent than the movie files on my clie by about 50%.

I have plenty of cool little games for my clie, but none yet for my axim as I am relatively new to the PPC field. so any suggestions are welcome (Those that don't use the center button of doom)

As for size... well it's um big... Not that most pocketpcs aren't huge in my opinion (Being a clie user, where my clie and it's case are smaller than the axim alone) Though the hp1910 is nice and small... Personally I wouldn't mind the size increase so much if they were to offer me a little more... such as a 640x480 display and perhaps something around a 1ghz processor (which apparently is possible if you were to read intel's spec sheets on the pxa250)

Battery life is nice... It lasts as long as my clie does usually, which is very good. Though if they made this thing from aluminum or something they could fit more battery in the same size, which would be awesome.

Style... Well it's not bad... It certainly could have resembled dell's desktops, which meant that I would only be able to use it in the dark when I couldn't see it... Thank god it doesn't. Over all it's on par with most pocketpc manufacturers... Though it doesn't have the style of the clie... I guess dell can't beat sony at designing incredibly tiny attractive looking packages that scream "Buy me now! You know you cannot resist this designer casing!" However they do have that "Buy me now! I'm so much cheaper than the alternative pocketpc's and I provide the same thing so you would be stupid as to pass up this opportunity as we will wise up and raise our prices to match the other manufacturers because we can make more profit that way."

Overall I think I like it... (That's alot coming from a clie user) But I will still use both I think... Clie for medical applications and Axim for fun and games... (besides, patients look at you oddly if you have a big buldge in your pockets ^_^)

Well, 400mhz is the fastest PXA-250 part available. There is another chip based on the same XScale core, the 80200 which has a 733-mhz SKU. I believe that one can run higher than that as well.

In the case of XScale PDA's, the main problem is the low performance memory. Its basically the same as what you would find on a strongarm based PDA, so at 400mhz you're usually just stalling 2x more cycles than you were at 200mhz for data, and not getting much new stuff done.

The key to fixing that is of course faster and better memory on the PDA's. But writing code in such a way as it makes the XScale predict what memory it needs, and also not need to fetch new things as often, can help a tremendous amount. Currently PocketPC2002 is completely unoptimized for the XScale. Even the current Axim X5, with its PXA250, could scream a lot faster if the OS and software running on it was designed to take advantage of its cache algorithms, branch prediction, and pipeline length better.

Just take a look at those new PalmOS5 XScale based pda's, like the Sony Clie NX70, they are extremely fast with a 200mhz version of whats in the Axim.

I have a feeling that like microsofts dominance in the desktop OS field, it's only matter of time before they begin to dominate the pocket PC OS field.

As for the price, most pocket PC's including the Cli'e are over priced, but Sony knows it's customers well, then again so does Dell.
