I've been experiencing the same problems since I recieved my X5 a week ago. I have a brand new Compaq Presario notebook computer running Windows XP home edition. I have successfully used both USB ports many times with printers, my digital camera, and mouse. After hours and hours of pain I have managed a few times to actually get it to syncronize my PIM stuff, but when trying to transfer files or even enter explorer (this includes us syncronize files), it will lock up and lose it's connection (usually requiring disconnecting and often a restart).
I finally tried my luck with my family's desktop computer, and everyone runs perfectly without a hitch (installed everything exactly the same). I've gone back and forth many times repetedly installing and uninstalling software and trying new settings.
I guess it must be the USB on my laptop. Which is beyond frustrating, since as you'd imagine, that is the computer I use the most, since it is the one I actually own, and it would be nice to be able to syncronize with it.
I still love my Axim of course... I've been hiding these difficulties from my friends, I wouldn't want them to think badly about my new possession...

Methods of file transfer?
I've been following this post and there seems to be two ways to transfer files to the axim, the first method mentioned is the "synced" method in which you have a folder on your desktop named "pda_name My Documents". This is the method that I used, and I thought that this was the only way to transfer files to the axim, however a few people earlier in this thread mentioned another method in which you copy/paste files in the "mobile folder". What is this? And how do you do it? Just curious. Thanks.

What I did from the beginning:
- Activate ActSync
- >File >Find - opens new window "Mobile Device"
- double click the first item "Pocket PC Workplace" or similar, whatever name you gave it. - opens also a new window in explorer style with the full details, like you are used from the PC.
- Fire up any filemanager you like and make drag and drop between the 2 windows as you like
-- cab's into temp
-- runtime progs into Program Files and so on
Just copied 2 directories with 510MB MP3 to my CF-card :D
Necessary conversions will take place automatically, if you have ticked them under the options.

I also have a Compaq Presario notebook computer running Windows XP home edition. Everything works fine. I loaded 3.6 activesync from the start and just installed the dell drivers. If you are using 3.5, download 3.6 from ms and give it a try.

try a hub
I read somewhere that putting a hub in line also solved the transfer problem. something with clocking..
although I have run both ways and no problem. but now i use a wireless interface. and can sync and serf from another room.

Considering that active sync is basicly tcp/ip over ppp over serial over usb, i'm not suprised that so many people are having problems!
I say: Down with activesync :)
(I would be perfectly happy with a standard usb mass storage device driver, then we could actually get decent transfer rates too)

Try syncing with the IR on the laptop and the Ax and see if you have better results. This will indicate if its the USB.
