Excel and Pocket Excel File Compatibility.
I am having trouble getting a Microsoft Excel file to work on my Axim X5. I have a spreadsheet that I use at work that I would like to download to my Axim X5 because I no longer have access to the spreadsheet at work. I was able to email the spreadsheet to myself to my home computer, but when I put the file in my Pocket PC My Documents folder and transfer it to my Axim it will not open. The file shows up as an Excel file, but when I try to open it with my Axim it gives the message " an error occured while opening". Any ideas on how I can get this to transfer? I do not have Excel on my computer at home, only Microsoft works, but the file is in .xls format before I send it to my Pocket PC Docs folder. I have tried adjusting settings in Activesync but still cannot get it to work. Thanks in advance for any help.
Jason.

Have you tried using the explore option in AS and copying it direct to your Ax; I copy files this way and also sync them and apart from a few minor issues mostly layout it works fine.
What version of Excel was the file originally created in, it might be a compatibility issue, because I have had a few issues with older files, pre Office 2k. My only other thought is the file might be corrupted.
Providing its not confidential if you want to email it to me I would be happy to try it on my pc/Ax and let you know if I get the same result.

I think you can download an excel viewer for your home computer for free. You shouldn't be able to do any spreadsheet work with it, just be able to view the file...although it won't help with you getting it on your Ax, you can see if the file works OK

Yes, I have tried to copying method as well. Just finished my search on the board and found a few other suggestions as well but still no luck. It could be an older version of Excel, its on a computer at work, but I have no way of knowing what version it is, its linked into an account that I now have very limited access to. Thanks, its not a huge spreadsheet so I think I might just try re-creating it in Works and then see if I can get it to work on my Pocket Excel.

Did you convert the xls file to a pxl file via activesynch? If it was copied without the conversion Pocket Excel probably won't know what to do with it.

Uhm, although it might not appear so at first, Works Spreadsheet can open XLS files. You have to open Spreadsheets and go to Open and open it. Then try telling your computer to open XLS files in Spreadsheets in future.

Alastair, no Birmingham, Alabama. Thanks though. I have been able to open the spreadsheet and work with it on MS Works with no problem at all, I just get an error message everytime I try to open it after sending it to my X5. Oh well, I'll keep trying. I was able to find out that the Excel that the spreadsheet was created on was Excel 2000, don't know if that has anything to do with it though. Anyway, thanks for all the input.
Jason.

Excel file
Jason,
If you haven't already done so, try opening the file through File Explorer instead of Excel. I have better success with that than opening it through Excel. I moved from an X5 to an X51v and there are some differences in the files (.pxl v .xls). I had lots of files on an SD card that I didn't synch up and convert when I made the change. When I save the changed .pxl file it asks if I want to delete it because it will save it as an .xls file.

You can go to openoffice.org and download their FREE office suite.
The Calc part of the suite will open all excel files and will then save then to many different versions of excel.
Then do the File Explorer copy and paste to your Axim and it should open fine.
