Data Backup Problems

I have been able to back up my Dell Axim5A successfully in the past.

However today, I tried to back it up and it calculated that I need 3791746.60KB storage required.

I tried to back it up anyway to the default folder and it said I didn't have enough room to insert a different card.

Has any one else had this problem? Any suggestions?

I did research the existing posts and found one referring to the Active Sync data back up. I did that, but I am not sure how to restore from that data if my Axim does a hard reset. Does it still connect to Active sync and is it able to restore the data?

What software? Where were you putting the backup file? I got squirrely data like that once when I tried to backup the directory that the backup was going into and it kept counting itself over and over.

I was just doing normal back-up of all data.
I keep my back-up file (default) on my SD Card

So, were you trying to backup the SD card onto the SD Card? That's what got me that problem! Make sure you are only selecting the Main Storage to backup to the SD card and see if that works.

I do not see an option for selecting anything else other than "Back up all data" and "Back up PIM Data bases only".

I have tried to initiate backup without my SD card inserted and got the same results.

The number is now smaller though, it is only 18048.9KB.

If this trend continues, then maybe tomorrow I can back it up.

Save yourself a lot of grief and use Sprint Backup PC. Covers all the bases, lets you backup from cards to your PC. It can backup one file, a bunch of files, or your complete Ax. Give it a try. There is a free download version.

What if you insert the sd card after you start Data Backup?

If purchasing Sprite Backup you can use coupon code 6AXBXDF2 to get it for $23.96 rather than $29.95 It still works as of today:D

$29.95 (or $23.96 for today ;) ) might seem expensive for a PPC app, but that is money well spent. Sprite Backup is a great back up application .

Some had reported that they were unabled to restore from the ActiveSync back up program. That is totally unacceptable. Sprite is easily, reliable and restoring is a snap with the exe file it creates. Give it a try, you would love it.

I am running into this same problem with My friends Axim 32 MB (my old one). The dell backup utility worked in the past. I select full backup and it says required space of 3785502.76Kb. This is oly a 32 mb device. It would not backup to a 128 MB card.

I use sprite on my own X5. My friend will only be using the backup utility on his. I am in process of saving items to activesync backup and have performed several soft resets. I used "where it my ram" software to see if any larage files, but again, there is more backup data that space on the device? This is preventing the backup from occuring to CF card

Suggestion besides a hard reset please.

The unit was a pocket pc2002 and was upgraded to WM2003 previously.

This is an old threa, but I have the same problem. I've backed up a user's X5 for a couple years now, and all of a suddent when I go into Data Backup it thinks it wants to backup 3.8GB (~3,800,000 Kb).

Aside from a hard reset, any solutions out there?

I am still curious also. My friends axim (as I posted previously) is still showing this. I think the hard reset may bethe only way to go on that???

Well, we hard reset his Axim and the problem of the inflated memory numbers is gone and back to normal specs.

The source of the problem is the db_notify_queue. If you Google search on that term you'll find lots of stuff. My queue file had 17 records, but was showing up as 3.99GB - that's the source of the problem. The file is used for reminders on the Axim. Even emptying the records from the file, which I did using a tool I found on the web, it still was 3.99GB. After a couple hrs. of messing around, I did a hard reset. It wasn't my Axim, it was another user, and I had to get it running for them.

There's a folder on the Axim that can via seen in Windows Explorer when connected via a PC, but can't be seen in "File Explorer" on the Axim. I believe it's called "Applications", or "Databases" (I forget which, sorry!). This folder contains the queue file & others.
