Hooking Axim up to Car Stereo via Cassette Adapter?
I was considering buying an ipod for my car stereo (or Dell DJ) but then I thought maybe I could hook up my axim to the stereo via a cassette adapter and be powered via the cigarette lighter. Anyone see any problems with this? This is the adapter I am considering:
I didn't check the price on the option you are considering, but I have what I think is a 'cleaner' option.
I went to Best Buy (Target also carries them) and bought a small FM modulator for 19.95 . It is powered by two AAA batteries, and plugs right into the headphone jack. It then sends a FM signal (designated by you) that can be picked up on your car stereo (or home stereo, for that matter!) I have used this also to show DVD's on my laptop, with wireless and GREAT sound through the car stereo system.
This eliminates alot of cords strewn around your car.
hope that helps...

Remember just one thing....
I have no idea what I am talking about.
Ever.
Hey, good to know! I've heard that some fm transmittors can have problems in certain areas, but if yours works well for you thats great! The price on the link I gave is in CDN dollars, as I live in Canada.
I've tried out a couple of these transmitters and there are definite differences in transmission quality. I would stay away from the Koss one. (Actually, the one I got was a rebranded Koss.) I ended up getting iRock, at Futureshop, which was MUCH more effective. Paying more is worth it.
I have the iRock and am generally satisfied with it. With me it varies as the FM signal varies in strength. As I travel around town the station signal I'm using might vary in strength, overlapping the signal from the Ax. With the iRock you can choose one of four FM bands but it's a pain to change it while I'm driving. The cassette option obviously won't be affected by anything like this.
I have the irock! and it works fine for me. I live in Loudon, NH and I am far from any conflicting radio stations. I recently took a trip to Bristol, TN and as I got closer to Bristol I ran into conflicting radio stations. I just had to switch to one that wasn't being used.
I noticed that it's easy to tell when the batteries are getting weak because the sound quality drops off and on my car radio the left channel starts to get really weak. The way I use it the battery life is pretty good plus it comes with a cigarette lighter adapter.
To Scottyb, you dont have to waste money on that adapter set from dell. Just go to your local wal-mart or radio shack and pick up a cassete adapter. They range from $9.99 to $14.99 (approx.). They're cheap and work great. Not only that but if you turn your screen off in WMP you can get some really long playtimes. I have one and all I do is plug it into the cassette deck put my axim in the cup holder and I have my music playing. Oh and about those prices, that's in canadian since I live in the great white north too.
I have a Sony casette adapter and it works very well. Some Audi casette decks have this tendency to switch sides and the sound goes crap - I flick it back, it stays there and it works well from that point.
I've heard people say that casette adapters were terrible but that was because they'd bought one of the cheaper ones which are complete rubbish.
I want to get one of those fm adapters for cars with only a cd player. (in fact I ordered one some time ago from the UK - the guy took my money and I've never heard back :( -> which reminds me, I'd better ring him up and go nuts.....)

If you have an amplifier, most will have a red/white jack that you can plug a headphone-to-RCA plug into, and that really rocks! Just turn the volume down in Media Player, LOL! The Axim works great and sounds great with a cassette adapter also, not a big fan of FM Modulators cause of the station bleed overs, unless you live in a very isolated area.

Now for the Dell DJ you can actually buy a cup holder that the DJ fits into, does one exist for the axim too? That would very much interest me! I could get a cheaper cassette adapter but I want the cigarette lighter to go with it.
