Sales Tax

I live in Indiana, and depending on how you enter the Dell site (Education, Home & Business, etc), sometimes they seem to add tax to an order and sometimes they don't. It seems like they tax educational and some business orders, but not normal consumer ones. Anybody understand their weird system of discounts and taxes?

If it is a consumer order they will not tax it unless you live in a state where they have consumer based operations. I believe this applies only to Texas and Tennessee.

They have a "nexus of operations" in many more states when it comes to their small business and educational markets. Some of the bargain sites like "techbargains" always mention how you can sometimes get special discounts and deals if you order via the small business process instead of consumer, but that you are then charged sales tax. I believe that the distinction is due to the fact that Dell delivers not just products but also services to its education and small business customers in all states which then triggers the "nexus of operations" requirement for sales tax collection.

OK, that helps explain it better. It sounds like I should definitely order through the regular consumer site then. I can get a 10% educational discount, but then I can't get the $50 rebate, and plus I would have to pay tax.

Thanks,

Ernest

Word from Dell:

Dell Home Systems collects tax on orders to Texas, Kentucky, Idaho, =
Nevada, North Carolina, Tennessee, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Florida. For =
shipments to other states, tax relates to the third party service =
contract only. The purchaser is responsible for remitting any =
uncollected tax on their order directly to the local tax authorities.

There ya go...
