Why does it work there but not here?

Here's the details (as best as I can recall).

At home Dell 8100 P IV running WIn ME w/ 4 ports on pc and a NON-powered usb hub. Presently works at home in the NON-powered hub.

At work not a Dell, P III, running Win 2000, 2 USB ports on PC, runs (as a test only) a USB zip drive -- no problem. Will not run Axim. Won't find the thing.

Tried loading, unloading, rebooting, 3.5 and 3.6. Tried both ports, even did a flash update to BIOS.

The zip drive works the Axim does not.

I really do not want to buy a new cable or anything.

Now here is one thing I find interesting.

Presently all activesync stuff is NOT loaded. The cradle is still hooked up to both the PC and the power. When I switch the USB from one port to the other the screen lights up.

So, something is going on.

What do you think or can offer.

I cannot do any significant things to my office PC, I cannot reformat the drive or add other hardware or swap out or add a new card.....

HELP!!!

And thanks.

Not sure what you mean -- I am more of an end user. I did load the software per the directions. Several times in fact.

Plug the ax in the cradle or to the cable. Now open the Device Manager on your work machine. (start>settings>control panel>system>hardware>device manager) Now look under the Windows CE USB Devices for "Dell Axim USB Sync." If it's not there, you haven't installed the Dell drivers. You must do that to connect to the Ax. The fact that the screen lights up (I assume on the Ax) when you change ports indicates that the ports are trying to connect, but not much else.

USB is very flaky, so the fact that one device connects and another doesn't is unfortunately all too common.

Agree that it is flaky. But we tried at least a dozen times reboots and numerous other things. For what it's worth my old Clie never worked on this pc either -- and it too was a usb type.

I think and am a bit annoyed by this, that I need to obtain a serial cable. The same work around that the Clie required.

I mean with all due respect how many attempts is necessary to learn that it won't do what it is supposed to do?

We loaded un-loaded downloaded etc.

Short of downloading the acutal drivers from Dell site, we even loaded the driver part direct from the CD and it has never shown itself.

I'll try to do it from the Dell site tomorrow -- in the mean time, the computer is not working like its normal bad self, now it is really sluggish and clicking outlook sometimes does not launch the app.

Any other ideas -- I'll try most of them, but as it is a company asset I am limited in what I can do.

Thanks -- by the way, I am a neighbor - in Burke work in Rosslyn.

Small world (and we Fairfax types pay for all of it).

I had pretty much the same problem as you have. Was able to install on a Win 98SE machine, but not on my Win ME which had a prior installation of ActiveSync for the old ipaq

I found this helpful:
http://support.microsoft.com/default...;en-us;q264693

Remove the non-working copy of ActiveSync.
Do NOT have the USB cord from the cradle plugged into your desktop computer while you (re)install ActiveSync.

The cradle is not a USB device by itself - but the cradle + Axim apparently is. The cradle by itself will not trigger the correct driver installation - but the cradle+Axim will.

Before you invest in the cable, you might also consider a new USB card for the PC. Just about everyone who invested the $20 in a a new USB card had success with it.

BTW, live in W. Fairfax, work there, too, but travel a lot.
