strategy for memory settings

Hey now, I'm about to receive a 256mb SD card, here's my thought: when I go to memory settings, there's this slide bar for storage vs program - split down the middle at 31.76 each....ok this adds up nicely to a formatted 64Mb....but when I tap over to storage card memory setting, it registers Built-in storage at 21.24Mb....with 0.00 Mb in use....where's the 48? (in the 64/48 configuration?)
question 2 - when I get the 256 SD card, should I slide the main memory over more towards program, as I'll keep my SD card in the ax 24/7 for storage? Has anyone else found this to 'be the way'?:crooked:

I'm still very new to this - only had my Axim for 1 day now but to try and answer your questions....

The Built-in storage reading is correct - it doesn't count the amount of space that the operating system is using.

As for the memory settings, you can install programs directly onto your SD card, which is probably a good idea if you are installing a lot of software (just select 'no' when asked to install to default directory and then you can choose the location). I would be tempted to allow more of the internal RAM for memory as opposed to program space, although I'm not sure how much of an impact on performance this can have.

The 48mb ROM is partially consumed by preloaded software, the stuff that executes when you hard reset and moves into RAM Program Memory. The 21.2 is what's left over of ROM and made writable as "Built-in Storage".

Best just to let the memory allocation slider do it's thing in auto. It's more important to not load so much stuff in RAM "Storage Memory" so that the slider has more room to play in. Keep your Storage Memory usage to about 35 - 40 mb max so the rest of the 64mb RAM is available for Program Memory.
Some of the available Program Memory is needed for file transfer processes, beyond the space needed to actually run the apps you have open.

thanks for the tips! I will let it do it's thing...PPC 2002's pretty smart anyway.....

but in regards to leaving an SD card 'IN' all the time...is this ok? from what I guess, it inserts almost entirely into the Ax, leaving an acceptable amount protruding? (I'm thinkng w/ the Senna case that has an open spot for SD, this could work) Is it dangerous or a good idea? I've heard that just getting SD cards out is a trick anyway....

SD Cards, at least mine, insert entirely into the Axim...there is nothing protruding. Also, getting mine out is no problem. Just a press on the right spot and it springs right out.
