how to reinstall ppc 2003?
Hello,

I have a Dell Axim x5 with ppc 2003 already installed, i.e. firmware a05.... But say in the future i want to reinstall it how can i do this? I have the upgrade cd from ppc 2002 to 2003, however when I run it it tells me that it cannot upgrade as the versions are the same.... I do not have any other rom files....

thanks.

What do you mean by 'reinstall'. You cannot remove PPC2003. A hard reset will bring your Ax back to the state it was in when you took it out of the box. That's as close to a re-intall as you can get.

Not absolutely. The ROM (more accurately Flash EPROM) will not be affected by a hard reset. If you had upgraded to WM 2003 SE, for example, it would still be there and the Axim would not revert to its original WM 2003.

But you are right when you say that you cannot remove/reinstall the OS except by overwriting it with a newer one - why should you want to ?

If you update the OS by a Dell download it will be a very large *.exe file on you Desktop. When you run this with the Axim connected via ActiveSync the *.exe file will carry out the necesary actions to remove the old OS and replace it with the new one. If you use a Dell CD the same thing will happen.

yeh the main reason is that i have been installing/uninstalling many programs since I bought the axim a couple of months ago.... and probably done about 20/30 soft resets..... anyway if I do a hard reset then it should go back to the original ppc 2003 without anything installed on it right? Then just reinstall the software that I did like.....? thanks....

Yes, a hard reset takes it back to "Factory Fresh", without any apps that you may have installed. The Remove Programs screen will be empty after a hard reset . . .

If I do a hard reset, I backup all my stuff on a cf card, and then restore, right? Would this put all the junk back in?

Yes, it will restore your Axim to the point that it was at when you backed it up, programs, junk, and all!! Some folks like to back up, hard reset, then start from scratch. It all depends how you want to approach it. If you want an app to clean up your Axim, check out one of the following utilities:

MemMaid
SKTools
Pocket Mechanic

This is a loaded question . Actually, I use all three. I've found that they all have their strongpoints and weaknesses. MemMaid by far has the best user interface, but does not yet have the features of SK. SK's UI stinks, but it is a very powerful application.

I don't know if you are going to get any more of a cleaning advantage from MemMaid over Pocket Mechanic, as it seems PM finds and deletes more temp files. You could download the trials of both SK and MM, and see how you like them in comparison to PM.
