I currently have the X5 basic - 300MHz for 2 months now, it came with WM2003 ( dunno why, thats the way I got it ) and I like it very much but sometimes it seems that its not strong enough, for example when using Destinator 3:
When Im using a 10-30MB size of map the Destinator runs pretty fast, but when using a 50MB+ map (i.e. NY map - its about 65MB of size )there is a reduction in reply time... ( I have the maps stored in the SD,I don't have anything running in background And I do a soft reset before using the D3 )
I have the GPS CF and a few other toys and I intend to buy even more ( WIFI CF, leather and aluminum case, Arkon mount for car, proximity alarm, car charger and more )
My point is: I'm going to invest in the X5 quite a lot in accessories and intend to use it more heavily in the future.
My question is: Does it worth it if I sell my X5 basic and buy X5 advanced ?
The price gap is not an issue here, I got my X5 basic almost for free, so I can take it.
Is additional 100MHz of CPU clock and additional 32MB of ROM and RAM make a noticeable difference ?
I consider buying only an X5 and not X30 or X3 since a CF + SD slot solution is a must for me.
I think that unless you have multiple applications like the mapping one you mentioned that you see a significant reduction in performance I wouldn't upgrade to the advanced unit. I believe the major upgrade in buying the advanced unit isn't the processor speed as much as it is the extra memory that speeds it up. If you do a lot on the web, wireless, gps, watching movies, etc. it will make a difference. I think you need to do an honest assessment of what you would use the extra speed for to see if there is a cost-benefit from buying a new X5 Advanced. Now having said all of that more is always better. Good luck.
Thing is I use the D3 quite a lot and I intend to use the X5 much more in the future and actually promote it to be the main gadget ( up until now it was the Nokia 7650 :) )
I really feel I need the extra horse power, whether its CPU or memory.
I searched the web for memory upgrade and for CPU upgrade and overclocking and come out with:
1. No memory upgrade for X5 at Dell's or anywhere else, there was a company used to do it but not anymore.
2. Same for CPU and overclocking isnt recommended by most ppl I talked to
So thats basically leaves me with changing to X5 adv.
As I said the money gap isnt a problem here and I need a stronger unit so I just want to know if there is a noticeable difference
It's noticeable. I went Advanced after my Basic's screen broke. I don't use GPS, so I can't positively comment on 'D3' speed, but emulators and other more intensive apps run better.

They have stopped the upgrades for the time being.
From thier site:
"We have currently stopped upgrading the Dell X5 systems due to a system board revision compatibility issue. We are working on the problem, but do not have an eta on the re-release of the upgrade."
I think the x5 is great, however if you're upgrading now, I think it would be better to get a used ipaq 2210. I bought one for my dad off ebay and overall its quicker than my x5, and smaller.
I'm wating for the ASUS MyPal 720 to be my next PDA (I have a X5 Advanced). It has the 2 slots, camera and a 640x480 screen. I can't justify the money of a new PDA for any less of an upgrade. :rolling:
If Dell produce something to rival it, then obviously I will show interest
If you find a buyer for your current X5, and can't wait, I'd get a 2210 or 2215.
