need help!! ambicom wireless problem
ok i will try to explain this best i can. i have a linksys wireless router (with 4 port switch). i have 2 computers connected to that router. my cable connection is connected to the wan port on the router. i also have the ambicom wireless modem and have installed it on my axim with the drivers that were on the cd. what settings on the axim and what settings on the router need to be changed. also what do i need to check on the ambicom card. i have tried installing the drivers for the ambicom then doing a soft reset but that still did not help. am i wrong to assume that its just going to automaticaly connect to my network. i am trying to use the internet, msn, and aim on the axim but thay all say im not connected even after i have installed the ambicom. all help is apprisated im really stumped as to what to do. i belive it is possible becuase other have talked about it.
thanks in advance.

oh man networking is a bitch, plain and simple. that's why no one is responding.
you're gonna have to figure most of it out on your own. google is your friend.
but basically, if you stick with default settings on everything, your access point, your router, and the wireless card, you should be very close to having a working connection.
always try to use DHCP, which lets all the hardware try to configure itself automatically.
don't try to add any security like mac address filtering or encryption until much later on when you know what you're doing.
if you can't get it all to work, hard reset and reformat everything and start from scratch, always googling. eventually you'll make it go and you'll have learned a lot.
good luck.

Some basic info that can help you
THE SSID, has to be the same on the CARD, and the Router
So, go into the settings and make sure there the same.
the WEP encryption, should be the same on both devices.
I believe that because u have two diff manufacter's is whats causing it, there default SSID name is different. For example
I have a netgear card, and router. Both defaults were Wireless
so when I plugged one in, the other came through flawlessly
once u get it working, I recommend reading this thread

there ought to be a setting in the driver preferences for your card on the axim to just go with whatever ssid is broadcast. it should be automatic by default

Hi,
I also have an AmbiCom wireless card for my Axim. I have the Dlink 614+ wireless router in my home.
Can you log on through the file explorerer and see your desktop computer? Remember, your pocket pc will only see whatever is shared on your desktop.
Have you set everything to No encryption? Are all firewalls turned off? Start with this setting, then add one at a time back.. (firewalls and encryption)
I do have it all working here, but, it was a matter of a weekend, and experimenting to get everything working. I am running win 2000 on my desktop, and if I remember correctly, I had to set up a user as Pocket_PC1.. whatever the name of your Axim is when you hotsync..
let me know how this goes :)
good luck
Marylee

hello all, thanks for all your help. it seemed that it wasent the person who had a problem in this case. the card was defective. i went out and got a smc card and it works great and also seems really good on power when in powersaving mode. also it pretty much worked right out of the box (minus the ssid thing and driver). well thanks again (this is sooooooo cool) :D

Good to hear it Rapter, after all we went through, I had to know it was a defective card, or router, and I was sure that it wasn't the router, (never heard of a defective linksys product, heh) GREAT TO heAR IT MAN :)

uhhh, I can help with one or two of those....
First to share files with the axim you will like this proggie called Netrunner, actually I'll just post the quote from his post lol
this was posted by Deadhead (U da man!)

If you do it's pretty easy. Just share the directory you want (music dir?), on your desktop to have EVERYBODY with read access privileges
Then, you need to map a network drive into your axim so you'll see it as an additional directory on your file explorer (if you surf directly to the network share using that program, you won't be able to open the files (why?, I don't know but it's pretty stupid if you ask me <_< )
To do that i used a freeware program called NETRUNNER 2.0. You can find it HERE
After you map the drive into a directory on your PDA, you will be able to surf into it and picking files from it as if it were on the pda (just like another directory)
Now, the catch is that the windows media player is pretty bad playing mp3s from a network connection (why?? toooo many questions already, he he ). I guess it's too taxing on the CPU or it doesn't provide some buffer for replay. Whatever
I use the best program IMO to play mp3, pocketmusic. You can find it HERE. Not a single problem with it.
I use my axim downstairs while studying and i can stream my mp3s directly from my PC
IF you don't know how to setup your shares on the PC, you can find a lot of different post on how to do it.
Good luck"
Again, good luck :)

Ohh, and what version of windows do you have?
