It's only slightly bigger (well, okay, a fair bit bigger), then my old mp3 player, but its certainly alot smaller, and lighter, then reviews make it out to be, and the rubber things on the side have saved its life a few times ;)
Sure its not as small as some of the pdas, but those pdas usualy wont have changable batteys or sd+cf slots, etc
I moved up to the Axim from a Philips Nino 500, talk about big and heavy! so this is a lightweight to me. Plus unlike so many other new PDA's this has a removable battery, and an easily changed backup battery. Most PDA's you can never replace the backup battey unless the the whole device is taken apart. main reason I dumped the Philips Nino, the back up battery was dead and it could not be changed out. so if battery went dead and I did not have a power adaptor my data was all lost and I had to reload all system files.
Anyhow, I dont want something that you can not grab a hold of. some of the new PDA's are just o smalle and thin.
Hows it goin, EH!
Anyone who knocks the Axim for its size or weight is obviously jeleous that they dont have one. If it is a review in a magazine then they probably are employed by one of the other companies who are getting their butt kicked by this obviously superior Axim, that is in my opinion the best I have ever owned(which hsa included Casio,Ipaq and Toshiba which was second best)
Have a great day
I've seen that USB powered toothbrush.. and shaver too.
Back to the topic, anyone who says the Axim is too big to fit in their hands are probably little 7 yr olds who sold their souls to Palm. Either that or they're hobbits.
I think some of the reviewer discontent stems from the fact that the HP 1910 and the Viewsonic V35 came out at nearly the same time as the Axim.
Clearly, the Axim is larger than these two little things. However, I think that for the shortcomings those devices have (single slots, battery life, and on the V35, not truly having 64 MB RAM available), the size of the Axim is a small price to pay.
Remember, the form factor of the Palm V and Vx was revolutionary when it came out. Sitting side by side, my Axim fairly dwarfs the Vx, being twice as thick, about a half inch taller, and a quarter inch wider. In the world of handhelds and cell phones, the mantra has traditionally been "smaller is better," and the Axim was definitely bucking that trend.
However....I wouldn't trade it for a 1910 unless my life depended on it.

The Axim was too big for me. I'm not a hobbit or small guy. I'm 5' 10" 180lbs. I am coming from a PalmV background and wanted a pocket PC. I bought an Axim and just couldn't carry it around with me like I did my Palm.
I used my Axim for a couple weeks, before I noticed it sitting in it's craddle everytime I left. I just wouldn't bring it with me. I don't want to use a belt clip, or a big case. I want just the pda with me. The Axim was just a little too big. The Axims main purpose for me was calendar and contacts. Sure it was great it could do many other things.
To illustrate my point about size - I ended up purchasing a HP1910. Same price but half the memory, half the mhz, half the features and half the size.
You guys sound awful insecure, defending the Axims weight and girth vs. the competition. Everyone has different needs and if someone thinks the Axim is a little big - it doesn't mean they are a hobbit. :p Besides - wouldn't we all love a smaller Axim without losing any features? Don't encourage Dell to make a bigger one!
it's just a matter of personal preference is all. Back when small cell phones first came out I always said "wtf is with those? man that's too small! for one I'd probably lose it and for another i want a phone that I can acutally feel .. something with a bit of weight".. now i've got a nokia 8390, and alot of people (mostly relatives who don't know what's out now) say "wow that's a small phone! how do you push the buttons!" I love my phone now (well aside from the fact that reception is sub par at best and it's got some quirks)
I love my axim.. and I know the next PDA I get will be thinner and lighter for sure, but in the meantime I'm totally happy with it.
no doubt it is personal opinion. Coming from a Palm VII - it probably seems fine. The Palm 7's were huge for me - which is why I didn't get one.
I carry my palm in my pocket. Just a standard pair of dockers or dress slacks. The Axim was very noticeable for me. If I was still doing the consulting and travelling everywhere with a laptop bag, I would have preffered the Axim. Lots and lots of bang for the buck.
Having had a Palm V, Axim and now the HP 1910. Isn't it something I still hang out at Aximsite? There isn't anyplace like this on the web really. Friendly knowledgeable people. Almost everything here is PPC related and not necessarily specific to the Axim. It's a great resource.
If Axim releases an Axim about the size of a palm V - I'll be back on the bandwagon.
