ActiveSync starts then stops before sync-ing

OK.
I've read everything I could find on sync-ing, and tried tons of stuff. I'm at the point of doing a hard reset, but thought I'd ask.

I put my Axim in the cradle it connects,
PC ActiveSync says connected, then starts looking for changes, then goes to connected (for a split second) and immediately to not connected.

It does this in the cradle on my home PC.
It does this with a sync cable on my work PC.
It does this in the cradle on my work PC.

I can connect via IR to my work PC, but I can only send files back and forth.
I can connect via WiFi to my home PC, it attempt to sync, but has problems with everything except MS Money (nothing else is sync-ed), and says I need to sync via wire or IR to determine the problems.

I uninstalled active sync and reinstalled it (multiple times).
I installed the USB drivers again.
I followed the MS web active sync troubleshooting guide.

Someone suggested removing some of the items it syncs, I tried one, then removing all items. The only difference this made was that it did not look for changes.

I uninstalled that last couple of programs I installed. This didn't help.

I closed everything (from ICBar which actually closes them), and then closed ICBar. This didn't help.
I found two items open on the Today screen and closed those too. This didn't help.

Numerous soft resets and PC reboots did not help either.

Anyone have a suggestion I missed, or some little trick?
If not, I'll try a hard reset, but I'll wait until the weekend.

Have you tried disabling AV and firewall? If it is the Firewall, try downgrading the security settings.

Have you made sure that Today Plug-ins are closed?

If you're connecting via a hub, try a primary USB port.

Hope you reolve this, but if you do hard reset backup to BIS or a card first.

I had the firewall on at home and was able to sync, but I'll try that at home, I don't have a firewall on my pc here at work.

today screen things closed - third to the last paragraph in my post.

no hub.

I have a backup on my PC at home (about two weeks old - not too bad), but I'll do the one on the device too.

I have same problem ... need help too!

Hi,

X5
400Mhz
Syncing with HP Media Center m380n running XP
Cannot sync with Outlook 2002 SP2
ActiveSync 3.7.1

First - it used to work fine on another box with this and older versions of AS. I can only connect as a guest. A normal partnership fails just like you. I tried everything you did to correct.

I am interested also in understanding where the partnership files are actually created. I am wondering about permissions issues. I have not been able to find any files that are changed as I add and then delete partnerhips and I expected to find a profile fiile somewhere, based on stuff I read on MS's web site.

I have not done a hard reset yet either. There are no USB problems showing in the hardware manager. I have seen other postings that say to check USB things but why would USB work as "guest" but not when using a full partnership? That doesn't make any sense to me.

Anyway - if you get a response, I'd love to know if it works. I'll keep looking myself.

Complicated cure but it works :-

1. Make sure you have the latest release of ActiveSync which is 3.7.1. Believe it or not there are two releases of this release ! Use Build 4034. If you don't have this version, delete the Version installed and download the latest one. If you do have build 4034, open ActiveSync and delete all partnerships. Reboot the PC.

2.On your PC go to Documents & Settings>USERNAME>Application Data>Microsoft>ActiveSync>Profiles. Delete all Profiles. Reboot thePC.

3. In your Axim Registry go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE>Software>Microsoft>Windows CE Services>Partners. Delete P1 (and P2 if it is there). Soft reset the Axim. (Note: This step MAY not be necessary).

4.Backup your Axim to Built-in-Storage and to a memory card as well just to be safe. Use Sprite Backup if you have it, and compress the backup - otherwise it will not fit in BIS. If not, backup to two memory cards.

5. Hard reset the Axim. Drastic I know, but this is an essential part of the cure. Adjust region, date and time.

6. Restore the backup file.

7. Now connect the Axim to the PC via the cradle and ActiveSync. Set up a new partnership from scratch.

I have had this irritating problem many times in the past and used this rather dastic cure. But since I have had Build 4034 ActiveSync 3.7.1 the problem ahs never come back - knock on wood !!

Good luck ! Let me know if it works :rolling:

Big Smile Victory - but questions remain ...

Hello and thank you. I had the latest AS software and did not know how to edit the AXIM registry so I skipped that step. There were no profiles to delete so basically the only thing I did was the hard reset. That seemed to do it - however, something I had noticed before was that the "profiles" folder on the PC did not exist!? So there was never anything to delete and that had made me wonder if permissions were keeping it from being created in the first place (WinXP Media Center). I am the admin so it should not have been an issue but I suspect the folder was never getting created and populated (I searched the entire machine in fact). So, I did create a profiles folder manually and then did the hard reset. One or both things did the job. The profile folder is now populated with three sub-folders: guest, and the two device names I had previously given the AXIM when trying to solve this problem. I don't know where that info was kept but it reappeared one the partnership problem went away. If I had to guess, I'd assume that prior to the hard reset, the profile folder was not getting created due to permissions (unless it was getting cleaned up after the connection failed - however the partnership did appear in the AS file->device pulldown menu - so where was that data being kept?). Anyway - thanks for the reply. Like everything else MS produces sometimes you just gotta take it all the way down and bring it back up, yes? Best regards.

played around with settings, and sync-ing, did the uninstall and re-install of active sync, and finally got things working without hard reset.

Not exactly sure what got things rolling, but the sync had tons of things to do. Now I'll see if this works on my work PC tomorrow.
