File Transfer Capabilities DO NOT Stink!!

I'm posting this as a follow-up to one of my previous posts entitled, "File Transfer Capabilities Stink". Based on the response I got, I take it that there at least a few of us having trouble with tranferring any files bigger than 1mb to the Ax. Well, I'm here to tell you that it's definitely NOT the Axim. It's probably your usb, if anything.

I want to thank all those out there who pointed me in the direction of getting a pci usb card. I got one made by IOGEAR for like $20 ($10 after the mail-in rebate). Although technically, Windows XP says it doesn't regonize, it works, and there's at least some driver it installed. Since putting it in, I've had no trouble with large file transfers. I can do a copy and paste from where ever to my mobile device folder, and it works.

So, if you're having similar trouble (read my other post for a complete description), I definitely recommend the usb card option. It saved me from having to return the Ax. Thanks again to all of those who pointed me in the right direction.

:D :D :D

I don't think it's the USB controller inside the PC but the USB controller/driver in the axim or the controller which drives the SD/CF cards.

I use my axim on 2 different PC's:

own build with an Asus P4T-E

Dell GX110 equipped with an USB-2 controller

both high quality system that have no problems with USB (I use both PC's with a digicam, maxtor and WD external HD's)

my axim almost hangs when I transfer big files and not only with USB, I get a max of 30KB/s with my WiFi card (100% signal, 11mbps) and the same behavior, unresponsive axim while transferring.

and the worst thing is.. when I get sick of it and abort my sandisk SD corrupts

I have transferred a 249 Meg movie to my Ax over activesync with no problems. I think neurotic has it right, it's the USB ports. USB is flaky, and the slightest interference from the inside or outside of the case can hang it up. I have had problems with printers, cameras, hubs, mice, keyboards, etc., on a previous machine, and none of those problems on my new machine. The ax connects perfectly, both cabled and wireless, and transfers large files.

If you are having transfer problems, I'd check the SD card on the Ax first. It sounds like it is having reliability problems. SanDisk cards are creating a lot of problems right now for lots of folks.

I always transfer huge files via CompactFlash card reader, It is much faster for transferring MP3s etc. and I"ve had less issues doing it that way. That and I usually carry the reader around so I Can exchange files when not at home :)

My SD is going back to Sandisk (see SD problems thread)

I tried copying files to the RAM and that's much faster, 80-100KByte/s instead of the 20-30KB with an unresponsive Axim when transferring to the SD. (I can't check the CF with wireless ofcourse)

Another transfer method I use is copy from Dell Latitude 600 laptop through cradle, and paste in select folder My Computer/Mobile device/(select desired folder to paste it into).
5-10meg files are a breeze
Transfer to CF/SD cards through reader then move to desired location once inserted in AXIM is probably pretty fast too.

Curious ... I find that ActiveSync hangs when transferring large files (e.g., MP3) files when syncing wirelessly and to main RAM memory. How is this explained by USB ports or SD cards?

P.S. I have no problem transferring these files wirelessly using file exlorer.

I've done several 650mb ISO cd images over USB to move them between home and work. Slow, but I had no problems.
