Backing up to built-in storage

I just had an interesting experience with using Dell's Data Backup utility to back up to the built-in storage. It was an accident; I intended to back up to SD, as I usually do, but I neglected to change the target from its default value. I have basically nothing in the built-in storage (the memory utility tells me I have 21.23 MB free), and the Data Backup says that the backup would be 5308.91 KB. I noticed my error shortly after hitting the Start button, but I decided to let it continue and just move the resulting file to SD when it was done.

At least, that was my intention. The backup proceeded more or less normally with the percentage done figure moving steadily upward until it got to 98%. It took as long to get from 98% to 99% as it had to get from 0% to 98%. After about 3 minutes of sitting at 99%, I gave up and canceled it. I reset the destination to the SD Card, hit Start, and everything worked without a problem. (BTW, the Cancel did delete the backup file from the builtin storage.)

Since I don't intend to use the builtin storage for backups, this little anomaly doesn't bother me, but I thought I'd mention it in case anyone else might be having problems and wondered if they were the only one.

Hmm

Same thing just happend to me. Mine got to 100% and then just seemed to sit there. I too canceled and the backup file was not created. My problem is that I don't have any additional storage cards at the moment. Can anyone tell me if there is a way to do the data backup to my laptop as the only option on the "Backup to" drop down list was "built in storage"

You can backup with ActiveSync, but it takes a while to complete!

Indeed, I have the same "issue" (I believe this is a non-issue but anyways..). The last percent of a backup to internal storage takes about as much time as the preceding 99 percent. But the backup finishes correctly (at least in my case) so I don't see a reason to complain here ()again, from my point of view).

Aximwraith, what kind of error did you get? Did you check free space?

Greetings

Koen

That's a different problem that happens regardless of whether you are backing up to builtin storage or to a storage card. It appears to be that some program isn't quitting cleanly when the backup starts and leaves a file open so the backup can't read it. Try a soft reset and backup again. If it still happens, the culprit is probably something in your \Windows\StartUp folder. Rename the folder or move the contents somewhere else and do another soft reset. You'll probably be able to complete the backup that way and can then rename or move back the \Windows\StartUp stuff.

I use Pocket Backup for my backups. It shuts all running programs when you start the backup so that you don't get that hanging problem. Works well, is fast. You might consider it.
