Purchased music to main memory only
Hello ,
Forgive me if this has been discussed before. My searching has come up empty.
I recently purchased music from Wal-Mart.com. When I try to copy music to my Dell Axim x5, windows media player will only allow me to transfer to main memory of the Axim, not to the SD or CF card. When trying to do this, I receive an error stating, the license does not allow this.
Wal-mart states unlimited transfers to portable devices and music players which support digital rights management. The dell Axim x5 has been tested by Microsoft and is listed on the compatability list.
If I’m only allowed to copy to 64MB of main memory (less including programs and files), what good is it?
Any help you could provide would be appreaciated. Thanks
Windows XP service pack 1, media player 9, all current updates

It might be a pain, but could you transfer it to main memory, and then from main to your memory card?

Yes, I can transfer the music file from main memory to my memory card within the Axim but, the songs will only play back from main memory.

Well, that sucks. I wonder if transferring (or maybe reencoding) the file through WMP on your desktop would work. I would think not as WMP would see the DRM within the file.
If something like this doesn't work I'd be talking to someone at Wal-Mart about this, then.

ok folks--exactly right there why I don't use iTunes, Napster, Wal-Mart downloads...any of them--they're all worthless.
Best bet for music, in my opinion is to get cd's through the BMG Music Service. You'll get 12 cd's and pay (all costs/everything) around $50...as soon as you complete your membership, close it and sign up again. THEN you can get TRUE cd quality, of which you can rip to unprotected mp3's at 320kbs for MAX quality and never have to worry about this stupid DRM stuff.
I DO NOT use any peer-to-peer software, and I don't share my music; I don't burn cd's for friends, but what I own, I own...and I'll use it however I want to. DRM limits that substantially...it limits the music quality (because most of these sites give you 128kbs quality music which is NOT EVEN CLOSE TO CD QUALITY and they limit the amt. of transfers you can have.
I'm not buying it! I don't want Sony's Atrac's, Apple's AAC or Lossless, or Windows WMA files...they're all a scam I think!
-Jeff
ps: keep mp3 alive--print the t-shirt ...i probably wouldn't wear it, but for nostalgia's sake

This is not the direction I anticipated going with this thread... oh well,
I too have been skeptical for a long time about using music download services. The low bitrate and restrictions on file usage stinks! I have ripped many songs from my personal CD's and encoded them using Lame at 224kbs, stereo (not joint stereo). I have been satisfied with the resulting mp3's.
If I like most of the songs on the Cd, I will just go out and buy it. Sometimes though, I'm only interested in one or two song off the Cd, so buying the whole thing is kind of a waste.
Well anyway, I thought I would give Wal-Mart music download a try. 88 cents a song, playable on 2 computers, unlimited play on portable devices (so it says?) Sounds alright...
I purchased a few songs, downloaded them (128kbs wmv files), listened to them. In my opinion, compared to a 128kbs mp3 file, the wmv file had much better low frequency response and the midrange did not have a harsh sound to it.
In all, I think if they offered songs encoded at different bit rates and relaxed the restrictions on file usage, they would have a much more appealing service then what is currently available.

I have to agree! I've tried some of the download music and it limits you to much. I also got a Minidisc player from Sony and trying to get music on it is a joke. Their software is crap and the only way to get anything on it is to use 3rd party software and a bit of hacking skill.
Six, I don't know what to tell you about the music problem other than screw the companys that are offering crap to us the consumers. I personally think these companys should not be used till they quit restricting us so much. The performer needs to be paid but once I pay money for something I should have the right to use it how I see fit.

Flle sharing has worked for me. In a matter of 3 weeks, I now have about 4,000 mp3's, all music that I WANTED. Sounds great. No restrictions on playing the music. Sorry if this is off the threads topic.

Eh, they need to realise however far they go to protect against copying, it will always (emphasis on always) be broken by pirates... They're spending so much money on trying to protect their data, and it only ends up protecting it for a few days, then someone releases news that they broke the protection... meh.

60 minutes had a spot on this a couple of weeks ago. File sharing, that is. They talked about how BMG and others are creating bogus download sites, trying to slow the system down. They figured that hackers would get around it in very little time.
The big companies refuse to cooperate with File Sharer's. File sharing IS curently legal per 60 minutes. Legislation may be pending.
Cooperation will be the solution to this problem, shared by all.

on a slightly different note, Realplayer is offer sale prices on their download site, http://www.realone.com of $.49 per song and $4.99 per album.
I'm d/ling the Black-eyed Peas right now and will see how it transfers to SD later.
