That file is used by internet explorer. I don't think you can delete it, it won't let you as far as I know. You can delete all the other files and directorys with strange letter type names but they will all be recreated when you use ie again. Do you close everything before you try to do the backup?
It's been so long since I have used the active sync bu that i will have to do some looking to see if i can come with anything. you might want to look into using sprite software backup. it is so much faster!
One option to consider is moving the internet Cache, History & Cookies (the "Profiles" directory in Windows) to a storage card.
registry hacks are available to do that, or if you have a registry editor, navigate to HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Exp lorer\Shell Folders.
There are 3 keys, change the value for each one from \Windows to \SD Card or \CF Card, then soft reset. Files will now be on the card and you can delete everything under \Windows\Profiles.
I've been struggling with this same issue. Did you ever find a resolve JandG? I'm in no way a computer expert and I tried to delete this file through cleaning, but can't figure out how to - sounds like I shouldn't delete it anyway.
Gary, I'd love to try your fix (posted right before mine), but I don't have a registry editor. Is it something I could do in file explorer - just move something over to my SD card?
You can delete index.dat but you'll have to recreate it later by running the welcome.exe file in windows. But before you delete it try going to Start > Settings > System > Memory click on the Running Programs tab and make sure everthong is closed.

No need to recreate if you delete, It will be recreated every time you do a soft reset, or open PIE.
I haven't tried it in the WM2003SE OS but in the PPC2000, PPC2002 OS'es if you deleted it you would get the Page Cannot be found error everytime if you deleted it. I glad to hear this is no longer an issue.

Ok, so I'm hearing if I delete it, that it will recreate itself which brings me back to the original problem. I have everything closed and I still have the same problem JandG describes in the first post of this thread. I have to choose to skip that section of the backup procedure in order to get past it.
Gary, thanks for the info on the free registry editor. Do you think it will work for WM2003?

If you use the Registry Editor to move the fies to your SD Card (or CF), you won't have that problem anymore.
You may also want to look into Sprite Backup, it is the best and give you more options, including creating self-extracting backups to your SD/CF cards; saved my butt many times, including tonight when I made a change and screwed up the X5, had everything back up and tunning in less than 3 minutes:)
And yes, the PHM Registry Editor will work with WM2003.
- rename directory
- softreset (it's recreated new (clean)
- delete renamed folder
- activesync MAY no longer have this problem
But, per above, why would SD card solution work?
I think the reason why it would work is only because Activesync's backup operation doesn't include what's on your SD card, so it won't even look at that anymore - right?
By the way, I'm not sure if I've successfully downloaded the free PHM Registry Editor Gary posted, because I can't find it on my ppc or my pc. Is there an easier way? Could a cleaning product such as MemMaid help organize this issue?
