Cell Phone as Modem

I have a Motorola V60i and it has data capabilities. Does anything have to be done by AT&T Wireless, my carrier, in order for this phone to work as a modem. I intend to purchase a cable to connect my Axim to this phone but I don't want to do it unless it is going to work.

Very good question. I have not been able to find definite answers. Seems many cellular providers want you to use their web services to access the web directly on your cell phone instead of on your PocketPC. And, of course, they want you to pay a monthly fee to do so.

Have not been able to get a consistent response when inquiring about using the cell phone as a basic modem to connect to a dial-up ISP.

Exactly pmoto

All I want to do is use my cell phone to be a modem to access my isp. I don't need AT&T to do anything or provide anything for me as far as I can tell.

Depending on the device, a few only require and use your standard air minutes to connect. Of course I have yet to find one for my Siemens S46. :crooked:

I have AT&T as well and called their tech dept. to find out about using the phone as a modem (8390 Gsm) through the phone's and Axim's ir port. They said it was possible and to establish an infared link between the two and then have the axim dial *99# which is supposedly the phone's code to use the gsm's internet capability. I say supposedly because I have still yet to make this actually work. If anyone has any other ideas, please let me know.

at&t does not allow you to use your minutes when connected to a pda or laptop, that's why i switched to t-mobile. if you want to stay with at&t, you have to buy one of their next generation phones and subscribe to an mmode data plan, which can cost a lot if you use it often becuase they charge per kb. i have a sony ericsson t68i with t-mobile and i connect to the internet via bluetooth with my axim and laptop. it's not fast, but it's fast enough for me.

My cellular provider is Alltel and am hoping I can connect without having to add any other fee based cellular services. Therefore, after checking their return policy I went ahead an ordered the Gomadic cable to connect my Axim to my Alltel cellular phone. Am keeping my fingers crossed that everything will work without any problems.

Somebody in the Yahoo Axim group just reported using a Nokia 3360 to connect to his ISP using Cingular, but with no details on how that was accomplished. I've asked for more information, since I have exactly the same phone and wireless provider, but there's been no reply yet. I'll try to remember to copy whatever I may learn about that into this thread.

You are supposed to use your cell phone as a modem to connect your pda to the internet using your ISP (AT&T, MSN).

I found out though, that AOL is not compatible with the Dell Axim.

So AOL ppl beware.... :crooked:

I just talked with Cingular about my 3360 and the Ax. You can not use your cell as a modem to dial into your ISP. You have to use their data service, but It's only $3.99/mo and you have to subscribe to text messaging $ 2.99/mo, not very expensive but very slow. The Ir was not made to use as a modem, just to beam contacts and appointments.

Just as a note, sprint does not charge extra, I use my Sprint LG phone hooked to my laptop and soon to my axim (thanks for the gomadic.com link :) ) It does however count against my minutes. Transfer rate is woefully slow, 14.4, but it allows me to ssh in and get the important stuff done.

Now off to find a decent ssh client for the axim.

How could you get "caught"? Do cell providers constantly monitor calls to check if they are voice or data calls??? Unfortunately my Sprint phone (A460) is not one that you can hook a cable to for dial-in access. I will be switching soon!

I imagine their switches in short order can tell what a data call is. When I make a call to my ISP is shows up specifically as DATA in the display with sprint, but I don't get charged any differently that a normal phone call.

Mine works

I'm using a digital phone card CF from Socket and I have a Motorola V66 and it works just fine. The only thing is the connection speed is only 9.6k. I dial thru my SBC Yahoo dial access that comes free with my DSL subscription. I don't mind the slow speed at all I only use it when I travel or away from my home. The best thing is that it's FREE! you only use your cellphone minutes and if you have a lot in your plan like unlimited weekends or 1000+ the better. You can purchase the CF card at provantage.com for $70 it's the lowest and I've checked other sites that carry the brand. Good Luck!
