Question Poll: Usage of Built-in Storage

What do you keep in your built-in storage?
I'll Start:

Reset.exe
AltTab.exe
Pocket Hosts
Microsoft IE Tools
Dell Enable center navigator button patch
CNetX Flash Format
Adobe Acrobat® Reader
Lextionary
=================
Total In use: 11.83 MB (56%)
Total Free: 9.41 MB

For newbies:
Built-in storage is leftover ROM, that is not being used by the OS. So on the 400MHz model, you have ~21.24 MB of storage to use as you see fit. That is in addition to the 64 MB of Main Memory (RAM) allocated for Storage and Program usage.

As far as Main Memory goes:
Total In use: 18.80 MB
Total Free: 44.74 MB

i think you're confusing built-in storage with main memory.

built-in storage is like an internal memory card that came with the axim. it's only like 5 megs.

My 400 MHZ model shows over 21 MB in built in storage card.

63.54 total storage in Main Memory.

I use the Built in storage card to store data from Word and Excel. Word Documents seem to always go to the Built in Storage card instead of the SD card. I guess it is the first available. Excel can be set to either Built In Card, SD or CF as the normal storage places. Sometimes I move Notes over to the Built in Card as I can't find a way for them to automatically save there to start with in the Notes Program. Both Word and Excel allow use of storage cards to be used instead of Main Memory thru their own Tools -> Options screens.

I have installed some simple applications on the SD card instead of putting them in Main Memory. Also keeping some e-books and mp3 files out on the SD card as well as Mapopolis maps. It is great how the Axim seems to find all files related to an application regardless of where they are stored as long as they are in the My Documents folders. Only problem comes when the card is unplugged and data not available. For Example, I may have taken out my 128 MB CF card to use the Targus Modem and have not put the memory card back in the unit.

Liking the Axim more every day!

Create a \My Documents directory on the SD/CF card and Word/Excel will let you store documents there. Use Activesync>Explore to look at the root directory of the card and delete the "Ignore My Documents" 0 length file when you create \My Documents.

Generally, I would recommend against putting volatile documents in Built-In Storage. The ROM is only rated for 10,000 writes, as opposed to the RAM and SD/CF cards which are rated for millions of writes. It doesn't take that many writes to the ROM to hit the 10,000 point pretty quickly.

I just stuffed tonnes of games on the internal storage, if i start to get errors becasue of rewriting too many times, i'll just attempt to replace the starta flash chip (cough, okay, thats alot harder then it sounds, but desperate times...) I've got a few spare ones laying around here

I basicly stick all my vital apps on internal storage and all my documents and music on mmc, i dont trust storing stuff on ram, i've already HAD to do 3 hard resets becasue of windows pocket pc

:crooked: jbit, Why did you have to do 3 hard resets??? IS there something I should be careful of so I don't have to do a hard reset?

Thanks,
Dellman

I don't store anything there either. I guess that's the reason I bought a 256 mb sd card.

built in storage

If you have a new axim, very little tweaking done to it and no additional software added, then where do you see what is in main memory and what is in bis?

I don't have anything in built-in storage either. I try to keep everything on an SD card or CF card. I have a 1gb SD and a 256mb CF card.

I just store a PIM backup in my BIS. I noticed that it is much slower than a CF or SD card. I run programs from the CF.
