Wireless Connection Sharing.. nothing is working

I have read all the suggestions on the site thus far, and I have tried them. They're not working. I changed all the settings to WORK. I even tried adding the IP of the main computer as a proxy. Can't get to the net or use Activesync.

Here is my set up:

PC running XP w/ 2 NIC cards. 1 card is connected to a cable modem. 2nd card runs to a hub. The Belkin AP and the 2nd computer connect to the hub. My laptop uses a Belkin PCMCIA wireless card.

I'm using 128 bit encryption and have inputted the key and selected to use key 1. The Axim connects to the AP, and shows an excellent connection, but nothing works.

I wasn't sure which settings to use, but everyone seems to indicate having all three set to WORK is the best, though one soul did say she has hers set to Internet, and it works.

It gives me instant denial, though prior to putting in the IP for as proxy, it did at least ATTEMPT to reach (it thought for awhile before rejecting me).

Any help is appreciated.

Peyton

Just another note, I put pocket dhcp on my Axim, and it confirmed what I had thought I was seeing. It's getting an IP but getting nothing for the gateway address.

I can't ping anything on the network either.

Is your Belkin AP able to act as a firewall/router? If so, why don't you connect it directly to your cable modem (if your cable company requires you to register the MAC address of your PC's NIC, you might be able to tell the Belikin AP to impersonate your PCs MAC address so you wouldn't have to change the registration with the cable company). Anyway, this would greatly simplify your setup since you could remove the second NIC from your PC. Many problems I have seen over the years revolved around multi-homed (dual-NIC) machines (PCs or Servers). It just complicates things...

For what it's worth, my Netger MR314 wireless router/firewall is pretty good. I think they did away with the 314 and now have the same thing in a newer case, model MR814 - it's $84.95 (plus a $30 rebate!) at Microwarehouse.

Just a thought...

Hi, thanks for the response. The AP doesn't have the ability to act as a firewall. I have a firewall on my PC, though my plan is to get a wired router eventually.

Anyway, I have figured out the problem. A friend of mine suggested removing all settings and removing the encryption. I was able to connect. The IP addy previously (I should have noticed this) was a 162.....the Axim was giving itself the IP. It was talking to the AP, but it wasn't quite right when the encryption was on for some reason.

So I started to experiment. I turned back on the encryption and was going to try 64 bit when it hit me. I selected hexidecimal on the Axim instead of alphanumeric and entered in the key instead of the password. It works perfectly at 128 bit encryption with the hexidemical key instead of the alphanumeric. However, one thing I noticed was that when I went back to the profile, it says it has alphanumeric selected.

It looks like the Axim (might be specific to mine or simply a few) has a bug and doesn't really use the alpha OR it may be the my AP and PCMCIA convert it automatically. I can't be sure, but I am happy I am finally working.

I had the same issue with my Dlink card for the Ax. I had separate WEP keys for work and home and the software that came with the DLINK seemed to only be able to keep 1 key at a time so when I switched networks, I had to retyped the whole stinkin' key! Pain in the butt. So, I turned off WEP on both and turned on the MAC filtering instead. WEP has known issues, anyway;)

My question is still out there (from an earlier post) - does anyone know of a way to sniff out MAC addresses if your card is not on the MAC filtered (allowed) list. I haven't found anything yet and I don't want to have an open WLAN at home or at work!

Have you seen this article titled "Don't use MAC filtering as your only wireless network security solution"

Thanks for the link! I figured there was a way and that it was published out there somewhere...now I have to re-enable WEP AND keep the MAC filtering.

Well, I guess I'll keep trying to get my DLINK (now using the Prism driver instead of the DLINK one) to remember multiple keys. I thought I saw a wireless network profile manager app out there but now I can't find it...hmmm.

Just noticed that my Intersil Prism driver (which I switched to after giving up on the multiple WEP keys) has a setting to choose which Key to use. Of couse, can't fully test this until I get to work on Monday. Well, it seems to be storing multiple keys so we'll see. (Of course, could always just have the same WEP key at home and at the office...)
