Skype on X5

So with this X50 out with VoIP capabilities, I've been wondering...

is it really necessary to have an X50 to have pocket Skype function properly? If I were to install Skype onto my X5, could I use the built-in mic and speakers for communications effectively? Is the processor fast enough?

Thanks.

Yes, i have an axim X5 adv and skype runs just fine

the only thing is that you must have WM2003 and a network connection (like wifi)

i have used it many times with just the built in mic, i would recommend using headphones though, since the mic and speaker interfear

skype is no good, you can only talk to other skype users. a true voip programs allows you to call any telephone line.

I call land lines all the time. It does cost a few cents a minute, however.

A TRUE VoIP program encodes a voice conversation into IP packets for transport over an IP network.

It doesn't have to connect to the PSTN to be "a true VoIP program". Sure it's a nice feature, but not a requirement.

I've used Skype on my X5 but there is a problem, specific to the X5, which can cause the X5 to lock-up.

Last night I installed the latest version of Skype (version 1.0.0.14) and the problem is still there. The Skype website makes specific reference to the problem and say's that they are working on a fix.

In my experience the lock-up has only ever occurred when trying to shut down Skype. Otherwise it works perfectly. I've found that if I take the following steps to close down Skype, I have no problems.
Note that you need something like Icbar installed as there doesn't appear to be any way of shutting down Skype from within the program.

First logout and wait about a minute. Then remove the WiFi card and wait about a minute. Finally shut Skype from the Icbar drop-down menu.

Waiting for a minute might be a bit excessive, but it works for me.
