WM2003 upgrade available again?

Someone on the Dell forums asked about the WM2003 upgrade for the X5. We all know of course that Dell discontinued that upgrade in the US a long time ago. Well, this naive person didn't believe Dell-Rollie's answer and just went ahead and naively searched Dell's web site for the upgrade.

And found it!

http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/p...&page=external

Looks like it is available for purchase again. Well, at least the website shows it. Hopefully it is not just a glitch with the database.

What a surprise!

Interesting. It really is there. Wonder what made them change their mind.

I checked out your link and it is valid. I contacted Dell right away to verify that this was the complete upgrade to WM2003, because I have been looking for this upgrade for some time now. My first shock was that I got a guy on the phone that spoke English. The next shock was that it is the complete upgrade and that it has been updated from the previous one that was available months ago. He verified to me that this version is the same one used on the X30 and X50 Axim models, and that they have worked out all of the "bugs". I guess we'll see because I ordered, and it is to be shipped out on 11/29/2004.
Another note: I also asked the Dell rep. about any new SD or Compact Flash cameras they might have available for the X5. He said that they only one Dell has to offer is the VEO Photo Traveler 130S SD and that it would work with the X5. Well I wanted more Megapixels than this camera has to offer. So he told me that I should check with Palm Pilot. That Palm's cameras are tested to work with the X5. So if you are looking for a camera you might want to look in that direction. I will be.
Thanks for the informative post.

Oh no, here we go again. It's the iPAQ 1910 forum SD slot wars all over again. Look, it has been confirmed, officially from Dell and by many, many X5 users, that the SD slot on a Dell Axim X5 is not I/O capable, which is to say not input/output, in hardware. It is a memory-only expansion slot, usable with SD or MMC memory cards, nothing else.

If this has somehow been revised, let's see some documentation from Dell, please. Above we have 1) a borderline racist slur regarding Dell support languages, 2) a lot of hearsay with no supporting documentation, and 3) a direct conflict with Dell's official position of re-release of the WM2003 upgrade for the Axim X5 which was published by Dell, in the Dell forums, within the past month.

So please, if you have corroboration, share it. If you have hearsay, rumours, whatever, by all means share. Just don't pretend that such things are facts. Of course, if anyone can prove this about the SD slot I'll happily eat crow. :)

I don't know what that Dell rep has been smoking, but this cannot be true. First, the X30 and X50 have WM2003 Second Edition while the upgrade you ordered is the WM2003 Premium Edition, so it's not the same at all. Second, as Gerard pointed out, the SD slot on the X5 is not SDIO capable, i.e. nothing works in it except flash memory.

These Dell reps sometimes really have no clue.

What I'm starting wondering is whether these are actually conscious decisions by Dell. I have the impression that Dell is just a bunch of clueless, confused employees who never know what's going on. Things are just happening to them. Maybe it was some database glitch that made the upgrade disappear from the website and it went unnoticed for half a year. Or maybe it reappeared now by mistake, now nobody will notice it for half a year again.

So is this 2003 Premium edition any different from the WM20203 I already have on my Axim? I only purchased the Axim like, 2 months ago directly from Dell

Yes its back on the dell.co.uk website. Price just under £30 including VAT and delivery - the same as it used to be I think.

Not quite what I meant

As we've already bought the upgrade - shouldn't we be able to download the rom update for free like we did for the PPC2002 updates.
After all this is supposed to be an update of the original WM2003 not WM2003SE

As far as I know it was never pulled in the UK. It's only the US where it was unavailable for about half a year. Then suddenly reappeared. Dell-Rollie says it is a huge surprise to him, too.

I don't think it's an updated version. In all likelihood it is the same as the one they sold earlier.

Also, I don't think Dell will ever release an updated WM2003 ROM for the X5 because then it could be hacked to upgrade from PPC2002, as it happened once earlier.

to me this looks the same as the other upgrade disk that was out, they are just now selling it again

and i also agree totally with as77's comment, dell will never release (if they know whats good for them) a X5 rom update for 2003 since it has that good old possibility of being hacked
