What are registry hacks?

I have a question. I have read on several forums about doing a registry hack to fix this or that. But what are registry hacks? How do you do them? Why would you do them? Basically I have no idea about them and am wanting to learn them.
Thanks

Check out Philippe Majerus' site for starters. Always backup beforehand, remember hacks change for almost every ROM upate and OS change, and backup beforehand. Oh yeah, I forgot BACKUP FIRST!

Actually, a hard reset should restore the registry to factory standard, so any hacks should be removed. Mr. K's suggestion is very good. Back up everything before you mess with the registry because you might have to do that hard reset to get your machine back!
