Storage memory Vs. program memory.

since i am using x5 basic, i often get error message like" not enough memory" when opening large files. I have tried to install all the additional programs(other than the built in ROM ones) in the SD card and clean up the temp folders frequently, but still I can only get available memory up to 10MB.
Any idea how I can free up more storage or program memory?? What are these memories?
And what is that Built-in memory for?
Thank you.
