Rant... ActiveSync broke this morning...
It was working fine when I left work yesterday... got here this morning and ActiveSync now briefly connects, then pops up a dialog that says:
"Synchronization cannot be completed successfully. Disconnect your device and try again. If this problem persists, see the Microsoft ActiveSync Troubleshooter in Microsoft ActiveSync Help on your desktop computer."
Of course, the troubleshooter was no help at all. I tried everything it suggested... I've been through reinstalling ActiveSync (got version 3.8 while I was at it), deleting the partnership and recreating it, uninstalling the USB device and letting it redetect... all of these things worked fine... but it still refuses to sync. I didn't do anything out of the ordinary with it last night... didn't install any new software at home or anything... it just didn't work when I got here this morning.
I have yet to do a hard reset. I guess that's next. Wonder when my last backup was.

Before you do a hard reset, have you tried to soft reset? I've had this activesync problem in the past, and a soft reset fixed it right up.
Just a though.

I guess you have already tried unplug & replug the USB connection on back of computer, and reboot your computer?
Sometimes that fixes the problem. I've run into this problem before too, and I believe that fixes it.

I have indeed tried unplugging the USB cable. No luck.
I also tried a soft reset. I seem to have to soft reset a lot actually. I'm not entirely sure why either. I'm not using any fancy task manager... just the Switcher Bar that comes with WM2003... but there will be times that I tell it to close Calendar or something and Switcher bar will just hang. Everything else works, but switcher bar stops working. GRRRRR
Turns out my last data backup was a week ago. That's not too bad. Wonder what I've done since then that I'll have to redo...

I've had enough problems like you had with switcher, that I simply "switched" to not using it! Hehe. I use Wisbar instead now. :)

Ok a little bit of progress...
First, I did another backup, so that if I restore my week old one and it still doesn't work, I can restore back to this morning and not lose anything from the last week. Thank you, thank you... I'm a smart cookie... I know. :)
Second, I went into ActiveSync options and unchecked everything (Contacts, Calendar, etc) and tried again... got a new error message this time.
EDIT: What doesn't make sense is if this error message is correct, why didn't it work after I deleted/recreated the partnership? Bleh.

Well, it appears that restoring from my backup fixed the issue. Now I get to go about the task of remaking all the changes from the past week.
What a PITA! ;) At least it works...
