Windows CE is the OS that is included with your X5... it's just a later version branded as "Pocket PC" or "Windows Mobile." You probably meant to ask if you can upgrade to Windows Mobile 2003, which isn't available from Dell's website anymore.

If you bought it from Dell in 2003, then it most likely has WM03 already. Go to Start, Settings, System (tab), About. If the Version is 3.0.11171 then you do have PPC02. If it says Version 4.20.0, then you are already on WM03.

As pointed out by other posts, there are very few programs that will work on WM03 that won't also work on PPC02.

As stated before by others Dell no longer offers 2003 on a CD. I did contact them directly and was informed they no longer offer the software only with new units and they say they have discontinued selling the x5. So will have to see if they offer it again later. I think there may have been compatability issues and that is why it is not offered for the x5.

have you tried the program and it will not work? ppc2002 and wm2003 are similar as ike said, and the program will probably work.

I had a friend with it on his Axim X5, and I do not remember him having problems, but it has been a while since we talked. I'd at least like to give it a shot.

Thanks!

Yes, I tried the program and got the error essage saying software on device was not recognized. Maybe it will only work with the X30's but the developer said he thought it would work on all Axims with updated OS.

In 2003, Dell released a ROM update for Axim X5 users who had the buggy A04 version of the Windows Mobile 2003 ROM on their Axims. The update came in a file named R64365.EXE and it contained the A05 version of the WM2003 ROM.

Sometimes, an Axim X5 user may find himself in a situation when the ROM of the device needs to be updated or restored but the usual update procedure via ActiveSync fails for some reason (e.g. the device is dead because of a previous, failed ROM update). Luckily, Linux developers found out that the internal bootloader of the Axim has a feature that allows the user to flash the ROM with an image on a CompactFlash card. A document titled "Restoring the OS on a Dell Axim" describes how to activate this invaluable feature.

I have my X5 updated to WM2003. And from my experience with it so far, the X5 was not made for it. The system runs a bit slower (not general applications). For instance, simply clicking the Start menu takes a few more seconds to appear.

Completely disagree....

Mine came with WM2k3 and I also purchased the upgrade for my wife's, which came with PPC2k2. Both saw noticeable improvement in speed and stability. The chances that I was just lucky in two completely different situations are pretty slim.

I assume I can go back to PPC2002 A04 if I don't like PPC2003? It's been a while since I've been to the site, but I recall the original PPC2003 A04 being buggy, but the A05 release was fine. Does the X5 perform fine with PPC2003?

PPC2003 runs a tad slow on mine for some reason. Start menu takes a bit to bring up, and general browsing is slow.
