upgrade to Windows CE?

Is it possible to upgrade an Axim X5 to Windows CE? If so, where do I purchase the upgrade?

WinCE is the core for All Pocket PC's not the OS. The X5 could only be updated to PPC2002 I think? I've only been an Axim user for 7 months so please pardon my ignorance.

I thought it could hold 2003 and 2003 SE, but have no clue where or how to get the upgrade if it will run it. I need some update to runa communication program for my daughter with cerebral Palsy.

Sorry, I really don't know where but I can tell you the WM2003SE upgrade simply isn't going to happen. Your device isn't built for it. Maybe Linux would be possible. I also think I may have mislead you. @the old timers here-Did the X5's ship with PPC2002 installed?

Win 2002 was installed on the arlier models, then win 2003 was offered as an upgrade disc (free for a few Then paid for) unfortunately you cant get the disc from Dell anymore, maybe someone is offering one on the site.
The latest models ship with Win 2003 (not SE).

I hope someone will pop up with ideas of where I can get 2003; mine was delivered in 2003, but I think has only 2002 on it (about is very unclear on this, if you ask me).

Dell said they no longer carry it and there is only one from Canada on eBay at more than double the price of others; maybe someone else can point me toward something reasonably priced.

I saved it as a search; I just need it for a software program for my daughter with CP to talk, and so it is more than just a whim, but money is very tight.

They removed it from their site around a year ago, then something strange happened. About 3 months ago, someone posted a link to the product on Dell's site. Then, about a week or 2 later, it was gone. Not sure why they pulled it, but I heard that folks were modifying the ROM image and making it availible on the internet. Dell never gave a straight answer as to why they discontinued the upgrade.

Yes, I believe that it was going for $27.xx. Between 27 and 29 to be sure.

That would be a reasonable price. I would be more than willing to pay that. The copy on ebay was $68 with shipping and handling for an opening bid. I just don't have that kind of money right now.

Hopefully something will come along...

Windows CE programs should execute on your Axim if they're ARM. Mips and SH3 Windows CE programs won't execute. Windows CE (Windows CE.net in WM2003) is the core of the OS. Try to get an ARM version of the program you need.

If you are trying ARM and it doesn't run, or the display is cut off, then that means it only runs on Handheld PCs. Should be fairly cheap to get a low-end HPC on ebay.
