You send it back, you get a refurbished.

I really didn't notice it until now.

Check out footnote 1 on http://www.dell.com/us/en/slg/produc...es_pda_snp.htm
Quote:
Replacements may be refurbished. Defective unit must be returned.
That also means you HAVE to trade a broken axim in for a refurbed one. odd.

SO, if you got a C1 processor, don't break your axim. You might end up with a lower stepping.

it says: "Replacements MAY be refurbished." This doesn't necessarily mean that you'll get a refurb. Chances are, if they have a refurb that is same model as yours you'll get it....otherwise, they won't wait until they get a refurb, they'll just send you a new one.

still though...

I think this does discriminate over revision boundaries. And I do believe that this clause is enforced as often as possible. It's simply cheaper that way.

I believe DELL has stated that if you return it within 30 days you will get a new unit.. but if its past 30 days you will get a refurb of the same model..

Its not like there gonna give ya a b2 instead of a c1 like what you had originally had.

My brand new X5 has hairline scratches, Dell is replacing the machine.

They told me that I'll receive a refurb unit, and I won't be downgraded to anything lower then whats in the unit itself.
I'm not sure if that's good or not; I guess as long as the unit is in mint condition I won't mind.

All defective units within the 30 days are replaced with refurbs, I just called dell to confirm this.

What is meaning of C1 you are all talking about? I just received my "refurb" Axim this morning after talking to Dell on Saturday about a replacement. I had my original one since the beginning of January. The one I received today is a C1-2, whatever that means. Please explain....as long as it works great I guess I won't mind!;)

Thanks

I will bet $5 that Dell is saying this in this thinking.

If you have and advanced unit, you will receive back an advanced unit. I bet they don't even know/care if yours was a C1 that they will replace it with the same CPU.

I wonder if backups will recognize it being a different machine. I hex edited a full backup and saw that the CPU ID is in the file.
Hmmmmmmmmm

C1 is a CPU revision. To check what CPU you have, do this:
Go to the Axim's File explorer in the directory,
/My Documents/SysInfo
Click on the sysinfo file

The fisrt line is the unit ID "Dell Axim X5"
Second line is the CPU ID:
"Intel PXA250 400 MHz"
The last 2 charaters in the line is what the CPU revision are.

Supposedly the C1 is a fast CPU but the Axim memory bus does not take advantage if this which makes the C1 aka 255, a drop in replacement for the B2. One possible advantage of the C1 is battery life since the CPU has power savings features but that has never been tested to any length in real world or Axim owners.

Still don't get it. If I went from a B2 Stepping to a C1 Stepping....is that good or bad or no difference??:rolling:

P.S. I'll be happy as long as it doesn't do spontaneous hard resets like my old one was doing!

It's good in that C1 has a faster bus for memory. It's not good in that the operating system doesn't take advantage of that faster bus, nor does it have faster memory installed to work with the faster bus.

It's also good in that if M$ or Dell ever do anything with that faster bus, it may be of advantage to you.

Basically, for right now there is not much difference between the B2 and C1 chips.

Want to bet?
My Axim has the PXA255. The screen is not responding so I called Tech Support. The replacement arrived today, a PXA250 B2!
