Metal Case (innopocket) vs. Leather Case (vaja, sena)
All,

Just wanted to poll the members here as to what case type they are using to hold the axim.........i am using a vaja case and really like it, however i'm a former palm vx user and i had a metal case that was very durable and i miss just throwing my pda into my stuffed briefcase and not worrying about whether or not too much "pressure" was being exerted on my pda in its vaja case.

What case type are u guys using? leather case or metal case? Wondering if i should make the change to a metal case like the innopocket which looks really nice............

I have a Vaja on order-special blue color with CF cutout. I don't like it any bulkier than it needs to be, and I got the Vaja with CF cutout. It's a little pricey, but I figure it might as well be on the fun side. For me, it's definitely the less bulky form factor, but I especially like flip cases-I just find it much more convenient.

bab,

can i ask you a question. what is the purpose of a flip case like vaja with a CF cutout? With a wifi card or gps card or something you wouldn't be able to open it without taking the card out first....................

I ordered the Dell leather zip case for all 5 of ours. It includes two SD pockets and a large pocket inside, plus place for credit cards or such. The only problem is that after repeatedly placing and removing a CF card into the big pocket, it's already starting to stretch.

I've tried two seperate leather cases (sena and dell) and they were both too bulky, so ive decided to go with the pocket solutions flip protector.

How is the Sena case is too bulky? I have one and the leather is almost paper thin except for where it counts.

I have the EB Slipper case. It's made of nice leather and it fits the Axim well and has well-placed cut-outs. It fits in my suit jacket chest pocket, so I have no problems using it comfortably at work.

I also will likely pick-up the Rhinoskin aluminum case at some later date. I like the hard cases, and will probably use that one on the weekend when I throw the Axim in my fanny-pack, etc. The only concern I have with the aluminum case is the possibility that it is too slippery, and might fall out of my hand while holding it. I never liked the old Ipaqs for that reason. I just knew I'd drop one.

Anyone think the aluminum case is too slippery?

Yes, the Innopockets case is 'too' slippery but I've made a modification to my case which helps in this regard. I bought some cotton sports tape (used for handles of hockey sticks or on skateboards for traction) and placed a strip along each edge of the case. It helps a lot as I no longer feel like I have to maintain a death grip on my case. My original plan was to find some sticky-back neoprene (similar to what is inside the case) for this purpose but haven't been able to locate any. If I do (anyone know where?), I'll probably replace the cotton tape but in the meanwhile, this works.

I've posted pictures of the case with the tape at http://mywebpages.comcast.net/axim_stuff/index.html. There are also pictures of an inexpensive leather case (made by Fellows) that I also use when I'm throwing my Ax into a briefcase. While the Innopockets case is fine for protection, I like the Fellows case for holding extra CF and SD cards

ikehiker-

Thanks for the information and for the pix. Sticky-black neoprene would be great--or an improved design, like the Axim-body itself--but the sports tape doesn't look too bad either.

I went several weeks without any case (except the default Dell case)when I first got my Axim. Use the Axim daily on my commute, reading ebooks; fell in love with rubber side-grips. So, I got the Pocket Solution flip cover. Minimal protection (just protects the screen, really), but also minimal interference with access to the Axim's slots, etc. (can change out SD & CF cards, batteries, & headphones and can put my Axim in its cradle) without having to remove Axim from cover. And, whether flipcover is open or closed, I'm holding my Axim by its rubber side-grips.

Some people think the Pocket Solution Cover-Up is too "little" (not a proper case -- just a thin bit of metal), but sometimes less IS more.

I have a question about the Innopocket. I used to have an innopocket metal case for my old T-Series Sony Clie, and I loved it, except for the fact that the neoprene stuff wasn't everywhere that the clie touched the case, so there was some metal-on-metal contact between the case and the Clie. Is the Axim case like this also, or is the entire inside of the case lined with the neoprene material? I wouldn't want the bare aluminum to rub the finish off my Axim.

Hi Eric:
My purpose for the Vaja is so that I don't have to take the wifi card out if I don't want to. I like flip cases in general, where the flap flips over to the back-that's just a preference of mine. I find it easier to use my PDAs that way, but I like them to stay protected in the case.

I'm using the Sena, which I really like. It adds pretty much no bulk as it's so thin and it has a nice hard cover to protect the screen. I think it's pretty much a matter of personal taste. Get what you think you'll like and as long as you get something of good quality you'll probably like it.

My Innopocket is completely covered (well, 98% any way) on the inside with neoprene. There are a couple of spring-like clips in back that line up with some bumps on the battery. I assume these are intended to help hold the Axim in the case although mine is a tight enough fit that I doubt it would make any difference if these weren't there. As soon as I can take a picture, I'll add it to my website pointed to in my previous post. In any case, there should be very little metal-on-metal rubbing.
