Mobile 2003 SE

I've been having trouble trying to find out what the difference is or where can I get the Mobile 2003 Second Ed. software. I'm running PPC v4.20.1081 (build 13100). Is there anything more recent than that that I haven't come across??

Thank you,
Brian

Off the top of my head, 2003SE supports landscape mode (without soft reset) and VGA. There may be other features but I think those are the main ones.

And you can't get WM2003 SE on the X5.

Yup, no 2003SE on the X5

from the build number you posted, that means you have Regular 2003 which is the most up to date for the X5 series :)

That's not quite true. They chose to not release WM2003 SE but they still provide support for the product.

Errr....

I guess that depends on what one qualifies as 'support'.

If you have one and it's still under warranty and has a problem they'll provide support.

Sure they don't give you WM2003SE. But I don't see that meaning that they "dropped all support".

The PDA still works as it did when new. Dell are still honouring the warranty. To me it sounds like they're still supporting it.

and why would they give 2003SE...really the only up is the landscape mode

they still provide full support for the product, os updates dont really fall under support in my mind, they are upgrades :)

Like I said...

....it depends on what one qualifies as support. Personally, I never expected WM2k3se to be "given". I did, however, expect it to be available for purchase. This is a sore subject with me. Why have fat ROMs if you can't get a newer, better, larger, OS to go in it? I've seen all the lame arguments and justifications as to why they don't, but I don't find them acceptable. They need to go back to completely static ROMs and lower the flipping price of the PDA. The "built-in storage" is virtually useless, and the only reason they bragged about the size of the ROM in the first place was BECAUSE they had more room for upgrading. Now they're only reasonable function is for patches. For pete's sake, they need to get the OS right the first time, make the ROM statice and make it fit the OS. They need to quit telling me not to think of the PDA in the same why I think of my desktop and they need to START thinking of them as tiny desktops. THAT is how people are using them, more and more.

So, yes, I can see how some people feel that when nothing is still produced for the unit that is still considered a viable product it might be considered "dropping support". Or certainly a reduction to the bare minimum.

I go back to my original premise, that Micro$oft needs to further put the hammer down on OEMs (like they did forcing them to all use the same chip) and tell them that PDAs must be universally compatible with the stock operating system they put out. That way consumers can buy the upgrades from M$ (or rather retailers) and not have to get a "special" version from the OEM. The OEMs, in turn, need only worry about providing drivers for their specific add-on components.

THAT is the solution.

They've already given one update for the X5. It was originally shipped with 2002 and they made available an update for 2003.

I guess since I had one back in the 2002 OS days and so was given the option of an upgrade to 2003 maybe I just see it differently. I'm not sure when you bought yours, but I'm guessing you bought it after WM2003 was released, when there had already been a generation uplift for it.
