I read many reviews about PDAs in the area I was looking into.. the Axim was always rated high or highest.. only ever dicked for size.. BUT it had a pirpose for the size (the added slot(s) without adding to the PDA)
I was so surprised when I opened the box from Dell.. this thing is so teeny-tiny.
I cannot get over the size of this thing you all call big. It is all screen and slots.... how could it be any smaller??

True, think about the Ipaq that has to have a sled to get the expansion capability. Rightly so, compare an Ipaq with a sled to the Axim. ;)

I disagree about all other PDA's being smaller, most are nearly the same size as the axim. I have a casio em500 that is slightly larger than the Axim and ipag that I have is nearly the same size as the axim but with less funtionality. The Casio em200 is larger than the Axim too. Also I think the size and shape is perfect and feels very confertable in my hand. On any of the reviews for the other pda's that I mentioned I never read the they were too large only that they were larger than a palm device. I think the I1910 is too small.:D

Yes, to get the same functionality as an axim you need to add a sled to an Ipaq that can have a sled. The 1910 doesn't have a sled option. It doesn't have a wifi option. So - if you don't want to compare them you don't have to. I compared them because I needed a PDA and I looked at the 1910 and a Axim. I originally bought the axim for the obvious features but ended up selling it because of it's size. I got a 1910 because I needed something smaller in my pocket. I like the feel of the Axim in my hand, but in my pants and suit it was definetly too big for me. I'm just biding my time with the 1910 till a smaller Axim becomes available.
If you compare the Axim to anything else that has it's features it wins hands down. Not even a contest. But if you want to talk about size, well the axim has no options. No sled to remove to make it smaller or a different smaller version.
I know Axim folk take offense to anything negative about their machines. It's not an insult - just my personal experience!

Size of Axim????
Axim 5.0 x 3.3 x .07 6.5oz
iPaq h5450 5.43 x 3.3 x 0.63 7.26oz ????
iPaq h39XX 5.3 x 3.3 x 0.6 6.5oz ????
iPaq h38XX 5.3 x 3.3 x0.62 6.5oz ????
Source "Pocket PC Magazine May 2003"
Anybody notice something here that's not quite right?
Too Big??? Let's see, the Ax is .3" shorter and .01" thicker while the same width as the iPaqs. I'm not tracking where they get the Ax is bigger.
Somebody help me out here.

I compared the Axim to the 1910 - I wouldn't want those Ipaqs you listed either due to their size. Some Ipaqs are probably bigger then the Axim with the sled - while much smaller without the sled. I'd still have my Ax if I could remove the CF slot and have a much slimmer Axim to carry around the office.
Yes I realize the 1910 and Axim have different features(i.e. memory and cf slot) but their price point is the same.
The 1910 is:
4.46 x 2.75 x .5 at 4.23 oz
As you can see it's much smaller. Yes, I realize it doesn't have the same features. It's not like I had an unlimited amount of money to buy a PDA - I was looking at PDA's for 300.00.
I want everyone to understand that the decision I made was best for me. I'm still waiting for a smaller Axim. And when they do make a much smaller one - won't you be happy or will you insist they make it bigger?

There is nothing wrong with making is smaller, what frustrates us is poeple who call the thing big, COMPARED to those other iPaqs, casios, Toshiba, and basically every single other PDA except the 1910.
Reviews basically make it sound as if the axim is completely huge compared to the others, I think part of this misconception coemes fomr the unnecessarily large standard-issue case. But a GREAT number of peopel are surprised when they get their axim, expecting it to be a lot larger than it turns out to be.
But as a Compact Flash user, not having to use the sled is a great plus. If I wanted a pocket PC to use as more of an organizer, or maybe to run a few smaller-scaled apps, I would get the 1910, but since I use things ilke WiFi, I like long battery life, and greatly utilize the machine, features matter more to me than size.
I think that a smaller scaled axim, maybe without CF, and perhaps with a smaller batter pack, closer to h1910 sized, would be nice to see out on the market. We are not so much happy about big size, as we are angry at misrepresentation of the size.

You are correct double trinity. They do misrepresent the size in articles and when I purchased my Axim I read the reviews and then compared the actual sizes and saw little difference.
I do wish the Axim came with a cf sled though - then I wouldn't always have to have the cf card. I planned on using wifi, I still have a card I can't use as a matter of fact, but I wasn't happy with the internet on my pda - so CF isn't all that important to me.
Rickford pointed out he got his information from a PC magazine. He's right - they do mention the size of the Axim a lot. Most unfortunate. Dell should put more of those kiosks up or actually make some way available for people to see the product first.

As far as I can tell, Pocket PC magazine is effectively owned by Compaq (I'm guessing this since every sings 4-page ad in the one time I read it, at the airport, was for Compaq). I use WiFi on mine, but the majority of the time, I use my Axim in places where there are no hotspots, I just use the WiFi for thins like music streaming, and hte FAST file transfre across the network of media, swapping out songs and videos is a lot nicer on a 10 megabit WiFi connection, than a less than one megabit activesync. I can also transfer using Card Readers, but WiFi is still faster. (not to mention things like AvantGo connect).
I think Dell shoudl just start selling via Retail, retail sales can often be the greatest advertisement, even irf the sale isn't made on the spot, I know this has worked for a great number people who tend to be drawn like moths to those Apple Retail stores, buying iPods and other things on sight, making their wives angry, etc.

My DH bought me an Ipaq 1910, and I made him take it back because it was too small. I dropped it 4 times in 30 minutes (good thing I was sitting on my sofa). I was thrilled to get my Axim--it fits in my hand perfectly. I looked at the larger Ipaqs and they felt funny and sure seemed to weigh a ton.
But overall, the Axim is about the same size as my old Palm III, which I felt was too big for my hand. Must be the contouring on the Axim that makes it feel so nice inmy hand.

Well, the h1910 wouldn't be so bad if its sides had rubber grips like the Axim, I think that makes it very comfortable to grip, I either carry the thing along (with the rubber grips) or inside a leather sena case, the only time I've dropped the axim were off the edgeof a table on the keyboard, and from inside a jacket pocket that I had folded up in my arms (the jacket was folded, it slipped out) both times, the unit, and the keyboard survioved fairly nasty falls, it's built solid.
Also, the Axim looks bigger because the screen is smaller, I think some poeple might look at the pictures and say "oh, look how much smaller everything surrounding the screen is on THAT one", not realizing that the screen itself is smalelr on the Axim (fine with me, I care more about resolution anyway).

My comments earlier were directed at maestrosteve not at leapinlew. His post is on page one. I understand leapinlews decision to go with the h1910 even though I think it is too small for me. I would surely drop or lose it.
