I discovered that Dell is not the only one with a nice budget PDA:
The Viewsonic's V35 has almost the same specs as the Axim 300MHz, but the price of the Axim 400MHz.
But the V35:
-is smaller
-has no problems with the D-pad
Unfortunatly, the V35 has no CF-possibilities and only 32MB's of RAM.
What made you guys (or girls ;) ) choose for the Axim, and not for the tiny V35?
ps: No offence intended, its a little bit risky to ask this on a Axim-fanclub forum
I can say I chose the Dell over the viewsonic for a couple reasons. I am a palm 5 user and I started with the big and bulky palm pro. I wanted to check out the pocket pc scene and see what it was all about. I am pleasently surprised by the pocket pc. The Dell Axim doesn't offer much innovation - but it did offer a pricerange I was comfortable with. After using the Dell for a while I am surprised at how close this thing is becoming to a laptop replacement. I would love not to lug around my laptop on trips anymore and as the palm was just a p.i.m. I find the axim very functional overall. Overall I find the Axim a little too bulky to carry around like I carried my palm5. doesn't fit anywhere except my briefcase really.
I checked out both systems and the reason I went with Dell are:
CF Card and SD card
Price
Brand name
and most important - I didn't like those 3 birds at the top of the viewsonic.
I tried several others first starting with palms and then the Toshiba E335, the Hp1910 and now the Dell (still waiting for it though). The Dell had the best reviews of any I had read and I wanted the most bang for the buck. That is the main reason I returned my HP1910 - lack of expandability, although the size and screen were awesome.

I actually ordered a V35 a few weeks before the Axim came out! But Viewsonic held up shipments, they had they "where's my memory?" controversy... etc. So I ordered the 400Mhz X5 as well. I decided whoever got there first won -- and the Dell did... and I'm glad
I saw the V35 at CompUSA and it looked nice and sleek, with solid buttons on the front... but it's less capable and less expandable than the Dell, plus my girlfriend thinks the Axim is sexier B)

I needed a CF slot for WiFi or one of the other hundered different things a CF slot could be used for. I also don't have any D-pad problems. And last, but not least, I couldn't run around saying, "Dude, I got a Dell" I'd have to say "Dude, I got a Viewsonic" and that just doesn't sound right. :P
Axim = spend less get more (more memory, 400mhz, CF, rubber side grips, etc)
Viewsonic = spend more get less
The v35 is thinner, but it looks to be wider, I guess once you get around this size cm shouldnt matter too much anymore.
(dell, ipaq, v35)
Its a pretty easy choice, the bad thing is that they don't sell Dell's in BestBuys and CompUSAs so people are wary of getting them, I was, but the simple formula above couldnt be argured.
Actually I can carry the Axim in my pocket, mostly my inside jacket pocket, but hey its a pocket.

Thanks for the fast replies, I'm waiting till the release of the axim in the Netherlands (4 februari). And I am definatly gonna buy a Axim. It's the shape that atracs me.
I like the rounded forms of the Dell
And the Dell Axim remains the best price/quality relation
It's my first PPC, but it fits the hand pretty nicely. My only issues are w/ MS, so the Axim is 10/10 for me.
I use a soft rubbery belt case, and so far so good at work.

For me, it was first and foremost, price. I got the 400mhz Axim and the comparable IPaq was close to double the price. Also, the fact that it accepts both SD and CF media is a huge plus. If I ever go wireless, I'll have the CF slot for the nic, and the SD slot for storage. I figured the Dell name would be good for Warranty, service, etc. (I know many are complaining about long hold times, etc.) Also, I do like the way it looks, and in the cradle, the blue dell logo is pretty sweet looking also when lit up.
I chose the Dell for a few reasons, the first is the price. Everything else in the PPC world is rather expensive. Second, the two slots, I like the option to expand if the need comes.

I chose the Dell because of the price, the CF capabilities, and because of the next day replacement policy. By the way, does anyone know if you can purchase an extension when the warranty runs out?
